I know tere are STC's for the AA1 (Can't bring myself to say the
damnyankee word), does any one know of an STC for the AA5? I've had my
Grumman for 3 months and want to put a tail wheel on it.

Contact the American Yankee Association. They have the best experts and
information you
could ever want on the Grumman Series. They are based in Cameron Park
Ca. I don't have
the contact info on hand, but can get it if you need it

I have talked to the owner of Metroplx a few years ago about an STC for
the AA5. He said that if i'll give my Tiger for the drop test that is
needed for the STC he will do it. Or any other AA5, for that matter. He
couldn't find volunteers. He will take the wing off for you and put them
back if the plane comes out of the test in one piece. I did by his
digital fuel flow meter.

While searching for the Conventional Gear STC on the AYA site, I found
something even better: an O-540 STC!!!

Oh, never mind. (I guess my normal landings don't officially count as drop
tests) Thanks for the info.

At what heigth is a drop test normally done from? That is if that could be
considered normal.

I'm not sure any more, but I think he said 10'. But I could be wrong. I
Just remember that I said to my self "Even from that height, thanks but
no thanks".

OUCH!!!! A drop from that height is called a crash, isn't it? I would
expect that even in a badly blown landing you would be talking about no more
than 5 feet, and then there is still "a little" lift being committed to
"slow the fall." Or are you all that bad of pilots out there:-)

FAR 23.725 requires that the drop height in inches will be 3.6 times the
square root of the wing loading. For a Tiger with a wing loading of 17.1
that's 14.9 inches. Nothing can permanently bend in these tests.

One test must be made at 2.25 times that height or 33.5 inches. In this
test things can permanently bend but they cannot break. After this test
you'll want to completely rebuild the airplane.
