Many of us are passingly familiar with very small fast "minimum"
airplanes such as the BD5, the Davis DA-9 (for its low engine HP,) and
the one which one fellow designed of composite construction with a Rotax
engine which won a speed record for its class (designer name and model
escape me.) Any others which might be candidates?

In the 60's or early 70's I had an information package on a design
called the O'Neil "PeaPod," which could fit in this list. As I recall
it was of plywood construction canard, with a prone pilot who lays head
first and the aircraft was originally underpowered with a 2 cyl drone
engine, progressing to an outboard engine which was powerfull but had
cooling probs. The final powerplant was supposedly a 4 cyl drone type
2-stroke a-la McColloch. The plane had a wingspan of only 6 ft. so it
could be transported on top of the family car. Top speed was supposedly
250 mph and the landing speed was supposed to be rather high with an
impossibly long float due to ground effect.

Is any further info available about this design, ie: number built,
number still flying, improvements, etc.

I don't know what your criteria is exactly, but the Hummel bird is
quite small with a small engine, and goes fairly well. If your really
after speed, there seem to be quite a few formula I racers that
do amazing things with a C-90 or an O-200.

Just my thoughts.
