Hi

I was looking at the Honda Goldwing engine and was wondering if anyone has
used these four and six cylinder, horizontally opposed engines in an
airplane. These look as though they would be a perfect low-price substitute
for a Rotax 912 or any other 80 - 100 h.p. engines. If anyone has any ideas
about these, I'd really like to hear them.

Thanks

From Richard Finch's book, Converting Auto Engines For Experimental
Aircraft:
1. The engine is 25% heavier than a Honda car engine of the same
c.c.'s
2. The engine is extremely loud when running
3. The horsepower was much lower than expected.

That's all I've heard.

I recall seeing a 4 cyl. Honda motorcycle engine conversion at Sun-n-Fun a few
years back. The scuttlebut I heard was that Honda killed the deal. Which doesn't
make sense given that Honda car engines are used in the CAM 100 engine
conversion. That's all I know about it.

Low priced Goldwing engine? How low priced are you talking?

Magazines (or at least sport aviation) made a big deal out of the 1000cc
honda motorcycle engine with a reducer (don't remember if it was
planetery or belted) shown at copper state fly in several years ago.

Being the owner of a 93 goldwing with a 1500cc engine, I don't think
it'll be pratical, wieght wise. I don't know about other factors, such
as horsepower, torque, etc.

Price wise, its about a draw with the Rotax. Most of the old cheap GlodWings
that I've seen are cheap for a reason. The rest are getting gobbled up by the
other GoldWing riders.

The 'wing engine would be "somewhat" heavier than a rotax.

I remember that. They took out the reverse gear and used the transmission as the psru.
