Hi I have heard about a fellow who powers his RV4 with a rotary (Tracy
something). Has anyone heard how this worked out. I am a little fed up with
Lyc. what with costs as high as they are and still they seem to have
problems. I expect I would need something like 160-180 + available horse
power and wonder if this is reliably attainable
Any thoughts??

Greg,
There's a rotary engine email list. Start by going to the ACRE (AirCraft
Rotary Engine) website: http://home.earthlink.net/~rotaryeng
The mailing list is: mailto:rota...@earthlink.net

Tracy Crook's plane is still flying fine.

Yeah, but not cheap and they are not immune from problems. We had a RV-3 with one locally.

Greg, the man you're looking for is named Tracy Crook. He has over 800
hours on his Mazda powered RV-4. Although I don't have his email
address, the following link is to the Aircraft Rotary Engine web site
maintained by Paul Lamar. From that link you can see pictures of
Tracy's aircraft, and I believe you can also subscribe to the ACRE
mailing list which will allow you to contact Tracy and several others
who are flying behind Mazda engines.

His name is Tracy Crook, and he lives in florida. He has over 600 hours
on a 13b last year he got rid of his carb setup and put a redundant fuel
injection ECU of his own design on. I have ridden with him and the mazda
is smooth and quiet compared to a lyc. or cont. The rotary has the added
benefit of having 2 spark plugs per rotor built in from the factory.

They work well enough that I am looking for a good platform to put a Mazda in.
If you hear of a engine less performance plane please let me know, preferably
in the mid-west. I have a buddy with a converted canard. It looks great.

Dale,
Can you elaborate a little? Do you mean that the engine will not run if the
primary ignition set fails? ie zero redundancy?

If you turn off the leading plugs in Tracys RV There is very little
RPM drop, So they must effect some degree of redundancy.

Hey may have jiggled the timing values, but I'd like to see him try a take-off
or even maintain altitude while only runny one the trailing plugs. In the stock
configuration, the trailing plugs act only to burn the end gases.

I think the Mazda Lamans team might disagree with you too. they added
a third set of plugs for more power. Tracy did change the plug
timing, I believe.

Dual plugs do both more power and redundancy for all types of engines
