Ultralight Rules of Operations
Golden West EEA Fly-In, Castle Airport, CA
 

Ultralight Radio Freq. 122.7

   All arriving Ultralight Traffic will remain on the West side of Hwy. 99 until you are approximately 2 miles North of white water tower in Atwater just East of Hwy. 99. There are two water towers. Use the one closest to Hwy.99 as the landmark- not the one at Castle!

2 miles North of the Water Tower, turn East for Castle Airport.  All Ultralights must remain at or below 500AGL / 700MSL when on the East side of Hwy. 99 within a 3 mile radius of Castle Airport!

All arrivals for Ultralights will be from the North West Only! Beyond 5 miles use your own discretion. Between Hwy. 99 and Castle Airport, fly no higher than 500AGL!

We have been assured that the FAA will be watching and enforcing these altitudes!!!!

No ultralight shall fly on the EAST or SOUTH side of the Airport!  Avoid the NORTH side with in 5 miles of the Airport.

There will be absolutely NO arrivals or departures prior to 7:30AM each day. Hot air balloons will be taking off from taxiway at the North end of the ultralight runway at sunrise each morning!
 

ULTRALIGHT RUNWAY

During the Golden West EAA Regional Fly-In, the designated Ultralight Runway will be on the concrete pad at the North End of the ramp.  The runway will be marked 31U and 13U.  Left hand pattern will be used for runway 31U and right hand pattern will be used for runway 13U.

Ultralight Pattern Runway 31U - Left Hand Pattern
(Prevailing run way)

Downwind: All ultralights will enter 45 degree down wind at 500AGL from the North West at the North end of the airport. Watch for departing Ultralights on your left! Proceed down wind, parallel to the aircraft parking area and look for large white arrow (POINTING LEFT) on the ground indicating base leg.  Do not fly past this Arrow!!!

Base Leg: Turn Left Base at white arrow.  CAUTION:  Watch for large, high light poles (100 feet high) that parallel landing area. Proceed on Base Leg and look for Flagman.

Final: Line up on center white line for final. Flagman, with waving green flag, clears you to land.

Green Flag, means cleared to land.
Yellow flag, means to land with caution,
Black Flag, means to land immediately,
Red flag, means to abort landing (go around) and continue to fly closed left hand pattern at 500AGL.

If you are RED FLAGED, continue flying closed pattern (go around) until cleared to land or leave the area to the North West and return later.  Watch for approaching and departing traffic!

Landing: After landing, continue roll out and look for second flagman at about mid-field. Green flag will direct you to where to taxi off runway. Red flag signals where to stop and wait for parking assistance.
 

Ultralight Pattern  for Runway 13U (Right Hand Pattern )

Downwind: All ultralights will enter 45 degree down wind at 500AGL from the  West at the North end of the airport. Watch for departing Ultralights on your right! Proceed down wind, parallel to the parking area and beyond the runway (no more than 1/2 mile out).

Base Leg: Turn Right Base at 1/2 mile out (from Ultralight Runway). Proceed on Base Leg and look for Flagman.

Final: Line up on center white line for final. Flagman, with waving green flag, clears you to land.

Landing: After landing, continue roll out and look for second flagman at about mid-field. Green flag will direct you to where to taxi off runway. Red flag signals where to stop and wait for parking assistance.

Tie-Down Parking

A. No one will attempt to Tie-Down with out assistance!
B. Wait for "Follow Me" golf cart to lead you to your tie-down spot. You will be told where and when to kill your engine. In an effort to prevent prop strikes, you must adhere to all instructions.
C. You will follow golf cart to your tie-down spot and tie-down. At that time you will be instructed to go to Registration/ Briefing booth for your Daily Briefing and registration sign in. Please note: No Ultralight will be allowed to leave the field before pilot has been briefed and signed in!
 

Departures

A. No one will start his/her engine in the tie-down area!
B. No one will move his/her ultralight from tie-down with out first contacting Air Marshal!
C. Pilot must have a daily briefing, with sticker affixed to his ultralight, and have registered with Golden West prior to any engine start-up.
D. After take off, remain at 500AGL until you are West of Hwy. 99. Beyond 5 miles use your own discretion.

Leaving Tie-Down: All pilots leaving tie-down must have Air Marshal present. The Air Marshal will check for Daily Briefing Sticker and for proof of Registration for that day. Air Marshal will then instruct and assist you to the start-up area, with the assistance of the Crowd Marshal.
  Once in the start-up area, you will start your engine and wait for Flagman to wave you on to the Hold Line (Green Flag). Proceed to the hold line and STOP!
   Once stopped, the Flagman will then wave you on again to the runway when cleared for take off.

Take off:  (31U Left pattern)  After getting GREEN flag for take off, fly over the entire 1,000 foot runway. Extend your take off one half (1/2) mile out beyond runway and then make a left crosswind departure. Do not exceed 500AGL until you are West of Hwy. 99.
  Watch and avoid all incoming traffic on your left, using right hand avoidance strategies.

Take off:  (13U Right pattern) After getting GREEN flag for take off, fly over the entire 1,000 foot runway. Turn right crosswind departure at White Arrow on your Right. Do not exceed 500AGL until you are West of Hwy. 99.
  Watch and avoid all incoming traffic on your left, using right hand avoidance strategies.

RULES:
1. Introductory flights by authorized Instructors only. You must show your credentials (BFI or AFI certificate) to give introductory flights. You must have rented a booth for any and all commercial operations or activities.
2. All riders must complete waiver forms before ride is given.  All riders must be accompanied to airplane by ground crew, keeping them away from other aircraft or turning propellors.
3. There will be no reckless or inappropriate behavior.  No sharp maneuvers or aerobatics.  Air Marshals and Golden West Authorities reserve the right to prohibit, ban and expel anyone conducting unauthorized or dangerous operations.
4. There will be no engine starts, take offs or landings from 2:30PM-5:00PM during each day of this event. The Airport is closed during these hours.
    If you have to leave or arrive, you must do so before or after these time slots! The FAA is strictly enforcing this!!!
5. All trailer Ultralights must be assembled and rolled to tie-down prior to 8:00AM. For exceptions, contact Air Marshal.  Trailer Ultralights must use North Admissions gate.
6. All pilots must attend a daily briefing at the Registration/Briefing tent at 7:30AM or one of the scheduled times as posted.
7. All pilots will register with the Golden West and pay admissions for each day of attendance.
8. No flying over houses or large congregations of people.
9. In case of engine failure, fly the plane to a safe landing away from crowds and campers.
10.All fueling will be done with at least one ground crew standing by with a fire extinguisher.

Yessir, there is lots of nice lawn all over the place, there is also areas for rec vehicles. Bring your tent and live it
up.
