As I mentioned in one of the past articles about building the
Christavia, I have re-evaluated my engine selection and have decided
not to use the Mazda Rotory I now have. So it's for sale if anyone is
interested.

It's been dismantled, cleaned, inspected and reassembled with all new
seals except for the apex seals with were OK. The original fuel
injection system is complete and goes with it.

It is a 1986 13B. I paid $750 and then another $150 in seals but I'm
willing to take $500 to get it out of the shop so I can get what I
really want.

Thanks, Corky Scott

What made you decide not to use the Mazda rotary? Is this a complete engine or
would I have to add or fabricate anything?

I just decided I didn't want to have to deal with the negative aspects
of the engine. Which are. 1. High fuel burn. 2. High exaust
temperature, and 3. Loud exaust noise.

The features I bought it for, smooth almost vibrationless operation and
an almost mechanical impossibility of destruction still appeal to me.
But I need an engine that uses less gasoline.

What fuel induction system are you using and what is the fuel burn at various
power settings.

Sorry Victor I don't have those figures. I based my reasons for
dropping the 13B as the engine of choice based on Harry Whiting's
research and development of the engine. He is an Aerodynamics Engineer
and tried hard for two years to develop the engine and finally gave up.
Actually Harry didn't tell me to drop the engine, he said maybe I'd be
able to find some way to make it work but I'm reluctant to do that kind
of project because I want to be able to use the airplane to travel and
I'm not sure I'd be able to knowing the problems others have had.

There's one other thing I didn't mention about using the Rotory engine.
The rotor tip seals need lubrication. In the auto engine this is
handled by a tiny oil metering pump that meters oil to the rotor tips
by dripping it down the intake manifold. Lou Ross suggested that the
pump be dispensed with as unreliable. Racing Beat out in California
who build and race rotory's said the same thing. What do you do
instead? Mix oil with the gas. So in addition to all the other
problems I stated, you also have to mix oil with your fuel whenever you
fill up.

Thanks for the info Corky! It looks like the cons outweigh the pros. Would
you happen to have Harry Whiting's phone number, E-mail number or address, I
would like to talk to him? Since you have abandoned the Mazda rotary, what
engine are you looking at
now?

Sure Victor it's Harry Whiting 501 825 6958

The guy is pretty interesting, or seems so to me. He's just about done
it all. He flew military aircraft (and was one of the few who was shot
down in Manchuria and walked out) worked on Bonneville streamliners,
was one of the first experimenters in using fiberglass for boat hulls
(against everyones advice), flew as test pilot for the Navy, had his
own airline for a while flying DC-3's, has built numerous experimental
aircraft, built engines for Indy type cars, worked on superchargers, is
currently an FBO and is a consultant for Rotax engines. As if that
weren't enough, you can see him in print every several issues of EAA's
EXPERIMENTER. He wrote an article on fiberglass landing gear four
months ago.

He thinks he's a lucky guy because he's always done what he wanted to
do, and he's still here to talk about it.

In regard to the unsatisfactory experience a participant in this
newsgroup had with the Mazda type 13B rotary engine as an aircraft
powerplant, I'd like to mention that on page 36 of the October
1994 edition of Sport Aviation magazine, you'll see a picture of
an RV-3 in which the powerplant is a rotary engine developed by
Powersport, Inc., whose location was given as Aumsville, Oregon.

If anybody who reads this newsgroup knows how Mr. Alan Tolle has
been making out with his rotary-powered RV-3, it would be inter-
esting to hear about it.

I signed on as a member of EAA earlier this year so I could keep
up with the exciting field of homebuilt aircraft via their
monthly magazine, Sport Aviation. I also read Flying and sub-
scribe to Wings and Airpower. Have been interested in aviation
since I was a teenager growing up in Chicago during the 1960's.

I've seen the airplane and have been waiting for Powersport to bring
their Rotory engine to the market for about 5 years. They apparently
now have but it should be noted that they intend their engine for
aerobatic use only, or so they've said in the past. I can only assume
they suggest this because of the fuel burn but I really don't know this
for certain.

Hi -

Just wanted to drop a quick note. I owned an 87 Turbo RX-7 for
many years and the 13B was a good engine. It has a greater need for
a good cooling system than other engine designs. Keep this in mind if
you try to use it. The engine ran very hot and that tended to bother
all of the hardware that was fastened to it. In addition there was a
bizarre condition where the engine would "chernnobyl" and over heat
even with proper coolant levels ect.

It would be interesting to use the rotary in a helicopter.

Thanks Corky! I will give Harry Whiting a call before I proceed with a Mazda
coversion.

What year is your engine?

It's a 1986. Harry will probably be disappointed I chose to not use
the engine, especially since I made that decision after speaking with
him. He said, "you might be able to figure out how to deal with the
problems I ran into". I doubt it.

I wish to ask assistance joining this newsgroup. I haven't joined any
before, and do not know how to get the messages sent to my e-mail
address, send messages to the address "rec.avaition.homebuilt" (my
listserver needs an address with an "@" in it) or join the newsgroup.
Please, would one of you be kind enough to assist me? TIA; John
