Hi folks. I can't seem to nail down the weight of this engine and I'm
suspect of published weights. For example Lycoming publishes the
weight of an 0-235 as 218 pounds and when I had one weighed it was 241
w/no alternator. Can anyone help me on a C-85? If you have a weight
pls tell me what is included in that. Or give me a link if you have a
reliable published report.

Thanks. Don....

Hi Lou

Yes I also saw that on the web, my problem is i don't know where the
figures came from and the information doesn't indicate if the weight
includes oil and all the accessories. Thanks. Don...

Your weighing of the O-235 came much closer to my recollection than the
other figure, and I was curious about what else I might find, so I did some
digging.

Here are links to the certification data sheets that I found, including a
link to search for information onother brands and models:

http://makeashorterlink.com/?N29C22FDD Lycoming o-235
http://makeashorterlink.com/?M2CC24FDD Rolls Royce C-90 & O-200
http://makeashorterlink.com/?K13D23FDD Continental C-75 & C-85
http://makeashorterlink.com/?J36D13FDD Continental C-90 & O-200
http://makeashorterlink.com/?C39D26FDD Search by Product Type

Note that "Product Type" is really "Certificate Holder" in alphabetical
order and then you can expand the entries and look for the actual product
type in alphanumeric order.

Don't expect miracles all the time--the server seems to get overloaded, and
did so while I was searching.

I hope this helps.

Peter, you are the man, that is exactly the info I was looking for.
Looks like the C-85 w/o baffles, exhaust or prop but including
lightweight starter and alternator, carb, fuel pump, air scoop &
filter, oil cooler, ignition and 5 quarts of oil will come in at 221
pounds. The 0-235 L2C that I had weighed had a starter and no oil and
weighed 241, with all the other components it would have been 269
pounds.

Thanks very much. Don

Hmmmm! 'Don't know where you got that O-235 number. Lycoming
Specification #2499-G gives the weight of the O-235-L2A as 252 lb and
the O-235-L2C as 249 lb.

The engine was weighed at Mattituck and did not have oil in it. I
assume that's the difference as 6 quarts would equal about 10 lbs.

According to the type certificate data sheet (E-233) the weight (dry),
lb. 177, 182, 178, or 180 depending on what is installed. This engine
was certificated under CAR-13 and is weighed without oil.

The TCDS can be found on the FAA web site at: http://www.faa.gov in
the search block type in type certificate data sheet, then type in
E-233.

quick reality check: rotax 912: 80 hp, 165 lb; 914: 115 hp, 155 lb.

addition of the turbo lightens the engine by 10 lbs??

most of the other numbers look believable, but without a scale, who knows?
