Bruce,
I'll be the first to admit it - I've never weighed a full FWF O-320
about to go into a 172. However, Lycoming lists the following FWF
weights for the O-320 as going into the C-172:
O-320-E2D 268 lbs (C172I-M) (1968 on)
O-320-H2AD 283 lbs (C172N) (1977 on)
O-320-D2J 275 lbs (C172P) (1981 on)
Lycoming CLAIMS that their dry weights (the weights above) include the
carburetor, magnetos, spark plugs, ignition wires, intercylinder baffles,
tach drive, starter, and alternator. And, of course, the engine itself.
That leaves, by my count, oil, oil cooler, oil cooler hoses, and the
cooling airbox and induction airbox for the complete FWF package.
Are you saying that either:
1. The "missing" stuff I listed above weighs something like 120
lbs? Oil for the -E2D and -D2J (2 gallon sumps each) would be,
what, about 16LBS? Oil for the -H2AD (1.5 gallon sump) would be
12LBS. So that means that the oil cooler, oil cooler hoses, and
the cooling baffling are something like 100LBS?
-or-
2. Lycoming should die like the lying bastards they are?

I stood and watched as the 160 hp, 0-320 was unbolted at the firewall and
placed on the scales- all the baffles, hoses and other bits and pieces
stacked on with it. The shipping scales stopped at 390 lbs as I look at
my notes- so my statement should have been 40 lbs.
But I have seen other installations weighed which were as low as 365 lbs
for the Lyc. and Fords with more effort at weight savings top out at 410
lbs. I have not watched the scales myself but I've been told that an
0-360 conversion in a 172- was within 10 lbs of the Ford.
Did you see the Contact! article about the Chevy aluminum block 350
installed in a 172 which weighed only 40 lbs more than the 0-360 the guy
had removed but put out 300hp? Now there's a rocket.

Lots of good refs.

Very interesting. Lycoming's published weight for that engine is 275lbs
which includes everything you listed above except the following:
1. Exhaust
2. Mufflers
3. Heat muffs
4. Air box
5. Oil cooler
6. Engine mount
7. Oil hoses
8. Baffling
Does anyone think it's reasonable to believe that those eight items
weigh a total of 46 lbs?
A Cessna 172RG manual that I have right here lists the weight of the
O-360-F1A6 installation as 317.7 lbs. This includes those things
normally included in the engine "dry weight" (mags, starter, alternator,
etc.) plus the airbox and air filter. I think that ALSO includes the baffling
and oil cooler and hardware since they're not listed anywhere else in the
w&b total. Lycoming's dry weight for the O-360-F1A6 is 300 lbs.
I'll check Cessna's listed weight of my old O-320-H engine back when that
was what powered my 172 when I get out to the airport tomorrow.
>for what its worth.
indeed.
