The old cherokee's got a bad rap, the 4.0L engine, which is available in
both is an excelent motor that can easily last into the six digit range in
miles. The optional 318 (5.2l) is absolutly fabulous, I have never driven
a grand cherokee with it but have had experince with the Dakota's which
have the same motor. I read an article recently in either car and driver
or road and track about thier long term experiences with the Grand
Cherokee 4.0 and they said it held up well, they had a problem with the
cooling fan and it ate a belt up in the middle of nowhere. but that was
about it in 30k miles... The build quality is supposedly much better than
the old cherokee, which was the regular cherokees real flaw.. fit and
finish was pretty poor on some of them although the powertrain was
decent... (After Chrysler bought them that is, the early 2.8's which were
sourced from GM are absolutly terrible, they are a big part of the reason
for the cherokees bad rap... I couldn't imagine a worse engine for that
vehicle.. the 4.0 was AMC designed and actually is an excelent motor)
