I have recently purchased a Mazda Miata. What a joy to drive!! I would
like to upgrade the stereo system from just the two door speakers to also
include the headrest speakers. (This is offered in the next higher option
package along with cruise control and power windows which I passed on.)

It appears the radio is set up for this already. I checked the headrest
and it has an internal cavity easily accessed from the zipper located
under a flap at the top of it. There is no wiring to be found however
and there is the catch! I have looked for a wiring harness in the area
behind the seat to no avail.

Has anyone done this?

Is there a harness to be found back there?

Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks,

Leo Tucker

I'm looking at the Miata service manual right now. It's a bit difficult to
read the wiring diagrams, but it looks as though there are two connectors
on the back of the head unit. One is for the standard radio functions, and
the other is for the headrest speakers. Actually, there should be three
connectors - the third, round one, is for the CD player.

The speaker wires themselves should run down under the seat and plug in
there, but it's hard to say just where EXACTLY the wires should be (our
household Miata doesn't have the headrest speakers either, so I can't
look specifically for you).

What I would do is pull the head unit and see if there's a wire on that
end. It should be in the upper right corner as you look at the back of the
unit. It's an 8-pin connector but only 4 are used (the two seats are wired
in parallel).

My guess is that the wiring won't be there already, since it appears from
the wiring diagrams that some of the main underdash connectors are wired
differently based on options like cruise control, power windows, and
headrest speakers (the differences between packages A and B).

Let me know if you want me to look anything else up specifically.

I installed headrest speakers into my Miata myself. I bought the
standard speakers sold by Mazda from Monarch Mazda in Colo. They
come with a wiring harness. There is a groove in the seat cushion
which runs down the back of the seat on the door side. You have to
punch through the seat cushion to reach the headrest/speaker cavity,
but there is an indentation in the cushion at the point where you
need to punch. Email me for more info.
