*evil grin* Remember, Dodge's V10 started out in the Viper. It beats the 454
and 460 by at least 50 hp and 50 lb/ft of torque... and I don't think the
truck version is as "tuned" as the Viper's.
Here's the stats I have laying around... sizes, horsepower, torque.
Engine Type Chevy Ford Dodge
Diesel 6.5L V8 Turbo 7.3L V-8 5.9L I6
190 hp 190 hp 175 hp
380 lb ft 395 lb ft 420 lb ft
6-Cylinder 4.3L V6 EFI 4.9L I6 EFI 3.9L V6 MPI
160 hp 150 hp 175 hp
235 lb ft 260 lb ft 230 lb ft
Small Block 5.0L V8 EFI 5.0L V8 EFI 5.2L V8 MPI
175 hp 205 hp 220 hp
270 lb ft 275 lb ft 300 lb ft
Medium Block 5.7L V8 EFI 5.8L V8 EFI 5.9L V8 MPI
210 hp 200 hp* 230 hp
300 lb ft 310 lb ft 330 lb ft
Big Block 7.4L V8 EFI 7.5L V8 EFI 8.0L V10
230 hp 245 hp 300 hp
384 lb ft 400 lb ft 450 lb ft
* I think this one was a misprint, since I can't see a 5.8L putting out less
power than a 5.0L... anyone have the correct hp stat on Ford's 5.8L? I think
it'd be closer to 220 myself.
Of course, at the low end of the range, Dodge is really just playing around,
they're getting 214hp out of a 6-cylinder in the LH cars, but apparently they
don't have a truck version of that one... yet. :)

Chevy and Ford both have large horsepower engines. I have not compared
numbers, but I would not be surprised if they are quite similar in HP. Chevy
has the 454 which is also offered in the 1/2 ton 454ss sport truck. Ford has
a 460 that is also quite powerful. Generally both of these engines are used
in pickups where pulling power is necessary, e.g. 1 ton duallies, crew cabs,
etc. I think the V10 while sounding impressive probably does not offer a lot
more horsepower than a large V8.

Professor, I really do not know what the units are.
Don't hold me on this (I'm not sure in other words) but the V10 greatly exceeds
the power output of the large GM and Ford offerings. Its torque hovers around
its 450+ ft-lb and horsepower is supposedly more than 300, either way this thing
could pull stumps. I repeat, this figures may not be accurate. This is just
what I'm told.

Notice that the Dodge engines, in general, require a lot higher RPM
to produce that extra power than the Chevy does. I could not find
numbers for Ford. They don't put them in the sales literature as
readily as GM and Dodge. Also, remember that the 454 was once put
in the Corvette till the EPA decided we needed to get better
mileage.

That is a different engine, and it is rated at 5800 rpm.
Remember a truck, especially a one-ton, is built to pull things not
to drag race.
I could be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure the block is different fomr the
Viper, and it shares little in common with the sports car engine - which
is a Good Thing - sports cars and trucks live in different environments
and have different missions.

There are ways around that. I work with a fellow who will gladly drop a
supercharger into your LT1 or ZR1, and give you 600 street-legal,
CARB-approved horsepower.
He does the same setup with the 454 in GMC trucks, and it makes for quite
a hauling machine - I don't recall the total output, but he's able to pull
the truck, a largish racing boat, and still maintain 70mph on the highway.
Isn't that medium block Chevy rating suppose to be 230, where you have the
454 at? That's what my dad's 350 TBI has anyway, I don't know if they've
dropped it since ( I believe its a '90 model).
The numbers I used come from the 1994 pickup truck sales literature. I used
the numbers for 1 ton models. I don't have the literature in front of me, but
it is quite possible that the 1/2 ton models have higher horsepower and lower
torque ratings. I was trying to compare apples to apples since Dodge only
offers the V10 and Cummins in 3/4 and 1 ton pickups.
A question about the dodge trucks - has anybody seen any colors besides RED?
All the magazines tested red ones, the Dodge HQ in our area has 10 RED ones
in their parking lot, and the Dodge Dealer has a few RED trucks.....
Is that the only color for the first run or something?

Just went to a couple of dealers this week-end. The colors I saw were silver,
an electric blue, dark blue, black, black with gray, and of course red. I'm
sure there are more.
