I hit a deer and am VERY lucky to only have the following damage to my '03
WRX (http://jjjacobs3.home.mchsi.com/wrx_bumper/index.html). Nevertheless,
this is a $600 repair: new bumper cover - $200, paint -$100, paint labor -
$200, install - $100. I've posted a part request for a used bumper on
several newsgroups and online part locators, but in the meantime I've
thought of attempting a repair. For the two cracks on top, I can probably
pull the hair out and use touch-up paint, but the bottom crack will have to
be secured somehow. Has anyone tried this before or have any ideas?
Thanks!!

3M makes products to repair the soft bumper covers. Given what I can
see of the damage it's going to need the structural repair stuff on
the inside to bridge the tear. Then filled with the filler for the
soft bumpers. There are different products to be used depending
on what the bumper cover is made of. You'll probably have to go to
a body shop supply place to get the right stuff. Some auto parts
stores may have it, napas and car quests, but it will be hit and miss.

Perhaps you also need to consider installing a whistling device onto the
front of your car so that animals like deers can be forewarned of your
approach. Don't know how well they work but reputable retailers do sell
such a device, like wal-mart. I would feel absolutely aweful had I hit an
animal such as a deer!

There is such a thing as a "plastic welding" setup. For a cheap one
go to: http://order.harborfreight.com and search under plastic
welding. You could use this to repair the crack in the bumper cover.

You might be able to get a couple of spray paint cans with the correct color
code and do the job yourself with proper surface prep. I did that once to a Ford
granada fiberglass header front panel. Worked out good enough for the insurance
company to "approve" the work as done by owner. My premuim thus was not
affected.
