Contrary to the belief of All Stupid People, "Audi" is actually "Hark"
in Latin.

I'm not sure sure about the last part but the name originated from "Auto
Union".

If I remember correctly, the name of the company back in the '60s was something
like 'Auto Union'. Speaking of the late '60s, anybody remember the NSU Ro-80,
sort of the Audi 5000 of the times (but with a Wankel)? Didn't NSU get merged
into Audi?

Thanks George i remeber now 'Auto Union' merged with NSU and
'Audi NSU Auto Union AG' was born, that was 1969.

The story of Auto Union is like this.

In 1934 Auto-Union is a company formed by the mix of Audi, D.K.W., Horch,
and Wanderer. The developments they did were du to the policy of Adolf Hitler.
and the goal was to win on the race track the only race they scorer victory
in was the 1934 German Grand Prix with a driver named Stuck.

Best Regards and a Happy New Year

Audi is/was a merger of four companies (hence the 4 interlocked-circle
emblem). I'm sure of Auto Union and DKW, but don't remember what
the other 2 were.

According to one of their ads the company was founded by Horch. His
name translated into latin is AUDI.

The truth, is that Audi is Latin for Audi's original founder, August Horch
(umlaut over the o). If you know German, Horch means "to hear", and Audi
is the same thing in Latin (also where the word "audio" came from). Back
in the early 1900s, when August Horch had a disagreement with Mercedes-Benz
he quit the company and founded his own company -- Horch, but later he was
forced to leave and founded another company -- Audi. All the history and
trivia about Audi and the Auto Union can be found in the January 1992 issue
of _European Car_ magazine in an article titled "The nine lives of Audi".
