Even if this is the only time we could possibly need 4-wheel
drive I still feel it is worth the additional $700 - 1000 for
the 4x4. I've read most of the auto magazines about the Grand
Cherokee and they seem to think the 4x4 does not make too much
of a difference in gas mileage or maintainence costs; is this accurate?
Also, are there any problems or options that should be avoided
on the Cherokee?
Thanks

If this is all the difference is, then I'd probably choose to go
with the 4wd. But I'm kind of surprised, since the difference of
cost from 2wd to 4wd on most vehicles is more like $3000+

First , the grand cherokee dos not come with any kind of v6, the
engine choices are a 4.0 litre inline six or a 5.2 litr v8.
In my opinion , the 190 hp six is enough powerful for most puropses,
exept, perhaps, towing.
On the 2WD v/s 4WD matter, i think the grand cherokee is not, by this
time , availible in 2WD configuration, like the "normal" cherokee is.
Eve if you could get a 2WD one, i would go for the 4WD , since it does
give you more safety in adverse (rain , snow) driving conditions
