Low idle, hard start

My '86 jetta GL has been hard to start as of late.. here are the
symptoms..
--- turns over fine, but is idling really low and both the red battery
and OXS light are on.
--- if i touch the gas, the car either stalls or comes
very close.
--- if I let it run for about a minute at the low idle speed
then VERY gently touch the gas, it will rev up and the lights
will go out.
--- for the first few minutes of driving, the car still seems to be
starving for gas, and occasionally "bursts" as if it has gotten a fresh
gulp of fuel all of the sudden.
--- after a few minutes the car is warm, and runs fine.

Original battery?

After a few minutes the engine may be warmed up, but it's also been
charging the battery....
