Fan/Blower on MK2 Golf

The fan on my Mk2 Golf is not working on any setting. I replaced the
blower unit located behind the fan switch on the dash board with one I
knew worked. After replacing mine with the new one it still does not
work in my car. Any idea what the problem might be and if so do you
know how to fix it. I have heard a rumour that the blower unit in
located on the passenger side of the boot. Is this true?
