Strange electrical problem 1997 Passat S TDI

Hi,

My Passat has just started throwing off a strange intermittent fault.

Occasionally, when you start the engine, it coughs, and all of the
digitial dials reset to 0. The radio still maintains its settings,
but the clock and odometer reset. I've not noticed any pattern to it
as yet, it can do it when the engine is warm or cold.

Any ideas what to look for anyone?

You should check the battery and the minus-connection between battery and
car.
