Due to the dismal gas mileage, I am considering a propane conversion
for my 4X4 (In Canada, propane is about half the cost of gas).
Does anyone know what effect propane has on the long-term wear of
the engine? I have heard that propane results in increased valve wear.
Will I get as many miles on a litre of propane, as opposed to a litre of
gas?
Finally, how much space does the propane tank take? Would it have to
fit in the cargo area? Or can it fit under the vehicle, perhaps by
replacing the gas tank?

Thanks in advance!

Craig --

Rather that delving into the subject here, I will simply refer you to
the location on the WWW that has the DIY LPG Conversion pamphlet
formerly sold through the "Real Goods Trading Company" catalog. The
address is:

http://wps.com/LPG/index.html

The pamphlet is slightly out of date, but it is a good place to start.
I found an old article on a Pikes Peak Hillclimb race car (run by
Roger Mears) that ran on propane, but I haven't tried to contact any
of the sources to confirm the addresses and phone numbers.

Good luck,
