Hello everyone,
I am trying to set the timing on a 1995 Chevy 1500
P/UP with 305 V8. The Haynes manual states that I must disconnect a
connector from the relay box on the firewall. However, there is no such box
on this truck! Another recommendation was to disconnect an electrical
connector off the distributor (two-wire connector, with pink and white
wire). Doing the latter action causes the truck to not start at all.
Checking the timing as it is (without disconnecting anything) shows the mark
to be off the scale, when it is supposed to be 0 TDC. Could anyone please
tell me what I have to do to correctly check and set the timing on this
truck? Thanks in advance.

Sincerely,
Ali.

That's because your on-board computer is still advancing the ignition timing as
it sees fit. By disconnecting the connector that you are looking for allows you
to correctly check/adjust ignition timing w/o interference from the ECM by
placing it in base time mode.

O.K....here's the deal. On the passenger side of the firewall in the engine
compartment there is a black cover held by 3 plastic wingnuts. If you remove
this cover you will see a large wiring loom and there will be a single lead
(Black/Tan?) connector sticking out of this harness. Just disconnect the lead,
check/adjust timing, and reconnect lead BEFORE shutting engine off.

Good luck.

Now there's the kinda answer I was lookinng for with my 85 caprice.... it
was off the scale, even though I disconnected what I believe to be the
Electronic spark gizmo, but there were three modules on the bracket..... so
I'm not really sure whitch one it was!! The engine speed decreased when I
moved it back twards the timing marks, which I thought was wrong.... maybe
the computer just told it to do that!!

The car died a night ago..... so I'm not sure if I'll ever know now!! I just
saw this message and thought it might be relavent to someone!

I know we have some very knowledgeable people, in this newsgroup, but poor
Ali could be getting the wrong
info. I own a 95 C1500 with a 305. There is no such animal as a black cover
held by 3 wing nuts on the
passenger side of the firewall. Ali will have to look in the large wiring
loom that runs behind the distributor and
goes to the passenger side of the fire wall and plugs in. In this loom their
is a brown wire with a black stripe
running down it. He will have to pull some slack in this wire and cut it in
two. He needs to install a quick connect
to reconnect the wires after setting the timing on the engine.

Hey guys, check your service manuals!!! The timing connector was moved in 1995
to just below the glove box, in front of the evaporator case.

This is decent advice however,
Believe it or not with all the freakin wires on todays cars I believe there
might be more than just one tan wire with a black stripe under the hood. There
are only so many colors.
Instead of hacking the wire harness lets just read the emissions decal for the
location of the
connector. It is stated right there exactly how to set the timing and where the
connector
is located. It might take 5 minutes, a flashlight, and removal of some
electrical tape
but it's there folks.

The wire you are looking for is on the passengers side behind the glove box. Just remove the glove box and you will see a tan and black with white stripe wire.
