A garage is offering a undercoating for $39.95 for the under carriage
and inside the door wells. Wont this eventually wash off after driving
through out the winter in slush and snow? Is thie=s a good idea and
could this be done by anyone?
Thank you

Sounds like a scam to me . They are probably just looking for a cheap
way to get rid of used tranny oil instead of paying to have someone
dispose of it properly .

Well, they don't actually use trans oil. They spray on a can of goop you can
buy for $6. And they aren't much more able (and are MUCH less motivated) than
you would be at home to properly access, clean, and coat the areas that need
protection and avoid areas that do not need it (or are harmed by it, such as
driveshaft balance). I'm sure there are many cases of sprayed-on undercoating
trapping moisture and dirt, CAUSING rust.

Park your car over a sprinkler and turn it on occasionally. That'll do a lot
more good for less money.

howdy, so what did you do to your teacher to make him/her tell you
that?
Think about crawling underneath the car with a spray bottle/gun full
of oil, with oil and stuff dripping down on you......
on the other hand, it has been a procedure that will work for delaying
rust, I've used it on my push truck that I use out at Bonneville Salt
Flats.....however, it was already rusty before I started, and is worse
now, not withstanding the oil spray treatment....my feeling is that it
MAY have delayed the extent of the rust.....I've also heard of the
procedure being used out in new hampshire in the early 60's, but that
it has been actively discouraged due to enviromental considerations
lately....
