I have a 93 Honda Civic DX Hatchback and my driver side headlight is
very dim. If I put the brights on the light goes out totally. If I
turn the left signal on it blinks very fast, but is dim also. However,
the signal works fine when the headlights are off. Could this simply be
caused by a bad bulb? How can I fix this?

I have a 95 Civic DX hatchback. When my left signal started blinking very
fast, I found out that it was because the rear left turn signal bulb had
burned out. I believe that if your left front or rear front bult burns out,
your blinker will flash more rapidly on the side in which the bulb is burned
out.

If your headlight is dim and the brights cause the lights to go out totally on
just one side, then it's probably not caused by your alternator. It's likely
either: bad headlight or bad contact.

Check the driver side bulb. Also, make sure that the ground to the bulb is
good.

It sounds to me like the ground to the headlight and the turn signal bulb on
the driver's side is not making good electrical contact with the rest of the
car.

One condition fits all of the above symtoms perfectly. You have a bad
ground connection to the driver side lights in the front. Look for one
common point where the low beam, high beam, and turn signal all ground.
It will be bad. To verify, connect a jumper cable from the battery
negative to this point. This is what is happening. When the lights are
off, the turn signal light finds an alternate ground path via the
headlights (from driver's light to passenger's light to ground). When
the low beams are on, the driver's low beam finds a poor alternate
ground via the driver's high beam to the passenger's high beam to
ground. When the high beams are on, all possible alternate grounds are
removed, and the lights on the driver's side on out.

Sounds like you have a bad ground that is shared by the left headlight and
turn signal. Follow the wires coming off the headlight, look for where one
of them is bolted to the car, inspect and clean this connection.
