My car has a bad vibration at idle and I noticed that most of the
rubber on the mounts has dried and cracked and the transmission mount
is bottomed out. The transmission mount looks easy enough to replace,
but I'm curious how much effort it will take to replace the two front
motor mounts. My Chilton and Hayes manuals say to raise the engine by
placing a block of wood on a jack and jacking up from the oil pan.
The Chevrolet service manual warns not to do this and to use a hoist
to raise the engine from the top.

My question is twofold.

1. I don't have access to a engine hoist and would prefer to jack
from the oil pan. Have others run into problems doing this (i.e.,
bent pan). I don't want to risk a bent pan that will damage the oil
pump.

2. If anyone has experience replacing the front mounts, any advice on
things to watch out for would be appreciated.

It's an '89 S10 Blazer 4.3L 2WD 700-R4 Auto trans with 196K miles.

Thanks in advance.

I've done it with a jack under the oil pan. Slowly and carefully, no
problem.

If at all possible, don't jack up on the oil pan, instead see if you
can get a straight run at the harmonic balancer and jack up the
engine on the balancer. That's what I've done for years when
having to replace a pan gasket on an engine that needed to be
jacked up in order to get the proper clearance. Obviously if you
are removing the pan you can't jack on the pan. So the balancer
works quite well.

I've jacked my engine up from the pan many a time. Never had a problem.
