Hi,

The other day after starting the car and shifting into gear (5 sp auto), the
'Brake Lamp' light came ON after pressing the brake. Moreover at PARK, pumping
the brake pedal makes the RPM oscillate.

I checked the brake fluid level and it seems to be FULL. BTW the light comes
ON only when the brake pedal is pressed to shift into Drive or Reverse.

Can someone give me a clue as to what other things I need to look at ?
The car is 87 Accord Lxi with 84K miles.

Thanks.

Possibly a vacuum leak in the power brake booster...

The tail lamp seems to be ok because the light does not come ON by pressing
the brake pedal once only, sometimes it may take a couple of presses. Moreover
the brake 'red' lamps at the back seem to work well and fully coordinated.
(i.e. light only when the pedal is depressed)

Thanks.

5 speed auto? Pumping the brakes will cause the idle to fluctuate. This
is "normal". Power brakes use engine vacuum and when you pump them at
idle, you rob the engine of some vacuum.

Check for a burned out brake lamp (tail lamp). I think that is what

the "Brake Lamp" light is telling you.

Hmmm... I would think that an indicator on your dash that says
"Brake Lamp" would indeed indicate a defective brake lamp. This
could be a burned out bulb or wiring problem. If I recall, my 1978
Accord had one of these indicators on the dash and that is what it was
for.

Are *all* of the brake lamps coming on when the pedal is pushed? (You
may need someone to help you check; one in the car, one at the rear).
Some cars have more than one bulb on each side.

Since it's intermittent, it may be a loose connection at one of the
bulbs.

Just my thoughts...

Thanks Mike. It seems that there are about 4 lamps of which one of them
doesn't work (or works intermittently), could be loose connection. It was
pointed out by another poster too.

Have you checked your taillight when you press the brake pedal yet?
If you have not checked yet, you will find out your problem with damage
bulb or even malfunction with socket.

The damaged bulb, you have just altered the new one.
The malfunction socket, you should sand on the both poles to clean out dirty.

Any more problem, you are more than welcomed.

Try having someone depress the brake pedal while you check the brake
lights. Replace the faulty one the lamp should stay off.
