Your engine could be running too rich, which makes it easier for
gas to seep past the rings (if there's more gas in the combustion chamber,
more will get past the rings). Also check the PCV system. I think it is
supposed to ventilate stuff like that out of the oil.
Also check the air filter . A common cause of rich mixture.
You didn't mention if it was fuel injected or not. If it is you could have a
leaky injector dumping fuel in after you shut it off. If it isn't you could
have a ruptured diaphragm in the fuel pump which is leaking into the oil.

Did Chevy ever make a carbed 4.3? (sorry, memory failing....) a bad
mechanical fuel pump can leak gas into the crankcase.

I have a 92 S10 Blazer with the 4.3 and one of the earlier
fuel-injected motors (not throttle-body). It now has over 125,000
miles, uses Mobil 1 synthetic, and the oil always smells like fuel
when it's changed.
I also get oil analysis done through a very reputable place - and it
NEVER shows any fuel dilution in the oil.
So, I also wonder what's going on here??

Greg, I don't know a lot about GMs 4.3L but it might be possible
you have a bad fuel pump, leaking gas into the engine. Just a thought.

Mike--then keep on running and don't sweat it. If there was fuel in there, the
lab would detect it in a flash.

Dick,
I agree; that's what I've been doing.
It is strange though, and I do understand why the original poster is
concerned. The odor from mine is strong and very consistent with fuel
in the oil. The oil analysis results were of a great surprise!
If I were the first poster, I'd want to do at least one good analysis
from a reputable lab as soon as possible to confirm or reject the
notion. If it is fuel, it really needs quick resolution.
One thing I have noticed, is that odor does not come until the oil has
some miles on it - maybe a thousand or so, and then becomes stronger
as the oil ages and the miles go on. (You can smell it on the
dipstick if you try.)
You're an expert - any idea what's happening?
Curious .....
