I got a Ford Tempo with 76 K on it. For how many miles can I drive the
vehicle? Please email your responses.

Here - have a serious response. We had a 1985 Ford Tempo 2-door that we
got used with *supposedly* 69k miles on it. Within the next 20k miles, we
replaced easily $2000 worth of parts and sold it at 89k in disgust. It
*might* have actually had 169k when we got it, though... Three co-workers
have owned similar-year Tempo's. One died at 202k, one got totalled by a
deer at 190k, and the other is still running strong at 180k last I
checked, with only an alternator replaced. So, obviously, YMMV... Our
experience was that the engine was underpowered but fairly bullet-proof,
but the rest of the hardware (water pump, alternator, shocks, exhaust,
engine mounts, A/C, brakes, etc) sucked.

That car could get anwhere from 76,000 to 200,000 miles, depending on
mechanical condition and operating conditions.

It all depends on how well you maintain the car. Then of course you can
do a great job of maintaining the car but have the car die on you because
of some quality defects. You can never tell for sure.

Yes, but in a Tempo it will seem like a lot farther than 10 miles.

Ilya -
You sound worried. Are you going to let the people at
rec.autos.makers.chrysler know you're asking about the Tempo you have?

The chrsler group is a lightning rod for complaints, but not
many other makes of cars have groups (saturn, honda, but not ford, GM
or Toyota). If you read the newsgroups you will find a lot of negative
stuff about chrysler - like all the negative things that convinced you
not to buy the Intrepid. (and those things are real). It's just that
there isn't a forum for disgruntled owners of all makes, so you get a
skewed view of the world from reading this stuff.

The other responses in this thread are good and can be
summarized as saying some cars hold up great and other ones of the same
make and model are junk. Any way take care of it, and maybe you'll be
happy. Seriously, good luck.

My uncle got about 350,000km out of his 89 Topaz (same as Tempo)
before he finally had to scrap it. The transmission wouldn't go into
reverse anymore and he didn't want to spend any money on it. The engine
was still original and he never had any problems with it. He could've
gone even further with it I'm sure. He always had his oil changed every
3 or 4 months, and did mostly highway driving, so this is why it lasted
so long. I was really hoping to see that little 2.3 engine hit 400,000km
(250,000 miles) but it was not to be.

A friend of mine has a 91 with 115,000 miles on it and the car is the
BIGEST piece of junk I have ever seen. The body may be holding up but
the rest of the car isnt. It has just been a big dirt devil for money.
The engine doesnt burn oil but spits it out of every possible place the
trans slips all the time. There are maany other thinngs wrong with that car.

Don't laugh when I tell you this, but a good friend of mine, who is a
mechanic, drives a 1976 Pinto Hatchback. His 2.3 has 460,000 Miles on it,
and still running great!!!

I know someone who had almost no problems with their 87 Tempo for more
than 6 years. My Tempo has been much more reliable than Dodge Dart. I know
these are apples and oranges, but FWIW. Just because everybody's model may
be a lemon, does not mean my particular vehicle is. Just because everybody
seems to praise Ford Taurus, does not mean the one *I* could get will not
be a lemon. Anything is possible, but I was just trying to find out if
Tempo can make it to 200K miles, or it is an unrealistic expectation.

It is an unrealistic expectaion but not impossible. Normaly the cost of
repairs and maintainence to extend the life of a vehicle to that limit
is not economicaly bennificial. I have no research data to back me up,
but I have a feeling that the Taurus would not be one of the models that
would be prone to get that kind of service. They are notoriously
troublesome.

forth to school for years quite reliably. The car is still running, for all I know.

Figured it was time to move up a bit to my 1995 Mustang Cobra, so the Topaz and I parted
ways.

Hi Christopher.

And I owned an '89 Tempo. I had to replace the clutch at around 18,000 miles.
Ford paid for half though I argued it should absorb all the cost since I
never abused the clutch and clutches should last longer than 18,000 miles.
But Ford declined and I ended up paying approx. $250 for a new clutch.

At the same time the tie-rods were replaced, under full warranty. IOWs, Ford
absorbed all costs.

Later, the CV joints, a bent half shaft (the fault of a weak design or bad
material not my driving), and some engine oil gaskets, oil pan, valve cover
and seals were replaced, all under an extended warranty that Ford had
provided to cover some problems, I guess. I didn't pay for them.

Then about 2 years later, the oil leaks appeared again. The dealer's warranty
only lasted a year and Ford wouldn't do anything about the leaks this time.

I asked the dealer's service writer what's to say even after I had
the leaks fixed, again, what's to keep the leaks from appearing
again in several years?

I argued that I shouldn't be expected to pay approx. $2,000 to repair oil
leaks every two years, but the dealer's service writer informed me the Tempos
were known for this problem. I replied if only the salesman had been
as forthright with the truth as the service writer I wouldn't have
bought the car.

I then went to another dealer, bought a Mustang -- though part of me hated to
give Ford anymore of my business but if I wanted an American car, RWD, V8
powered, that and the T-Bird was about the only game in town, ignoring the
Camaro, Firebird or Corvette which I felt at that time to be out of my price
range, beyond what I wanted to spend for a new car -- and got rid of the
Tempo. It had about 90,000 miles on it and was in good shape save for the oil
leaks.

Overall, though, I was not happy wiht the Tempo. I had to have the A/C
serviced several times, leaks, and tire life was rather poor. Gas mileage was
OK but nothing to write home about. The car had a 5sp and the 2800cc (if
memory serves) 4-cylinder engine. It was a reliable car though it did very
rarely overheat, at least the engine temperature gage indicated an
overheating condition.

The dealer was never able to find and fix the problem though I informed the
service writer I noticed teh electric cooling fan was not running when the
overheating occured. Furthermore, I found if I shut the engine off then
restarted it the fan would then come right on, cool the engine and the
symptom would not appear for maybe several months or more.

Anyhow, one may be able to get lots of miles out of a Tempo. I had intended
to keep it forever, until the wheels fell off, but was not prepared to throw
thousands of dollars away in oil leak repairs.

And oil leaks can be rather serious. The oil gets everywhere and destroys any
rubber mounts used in the engine mount, and steering and front suspension
assemblies. Then there's the unsightly mess left on the driveway.

Sincerely,

Marc Warden (ma...@ibm.net)

My Tempo 87 LX transmission died at 70,000 miles automatic tranny shifter
could go from Park to Low but car could not travel forward/backward. AMCO
transmission gurus said that it was a factory defect that the spline
grooves worned out, teeth were not harded steel from the factory.
Cost me $800 to fix.

Age is an important factor in how much elapsed mileage can be expected for
any vehicle.. If you drive 50,000 miles per year then after four years you
will hit 200K relatively easily. Field service tech routinely get 200K
without any major repairs.

Short trips around town result in 100K being a challenge-especially if the
age creeeps over 15 years. My grandmother had a 10 year old Chevy with
20K miles and it wasn't in great shape.

I think there is a formula where age degrades the expected milage. I haven't
though this through but there is likely a decent formula that could be developed.

Other important factors are: driving habits, maintenance, environment, luck
and your expectations of what constitutes running.

The tempo is, and always was a cheap car. This is not to say
necessarily low priced to maintain and operate, but if properly
maintained and treated, many went a long way. If not maintained, many
expired early. People who buy "cheap" cars often do not spend the
required money on maintenance, and the cars get a bad name. Being a
"cheap" car, the quality is not exceptional, and the durability is not
exceptional. If that is kept in mind, they can be good cars.

Mine was awesome as far as I had no problems, just changed the oil and regular maintenance but be careful turning, mine rolled head over heels, not sure if something broke as I was turning, but I've read this is a issue.
