Could some one help me with the firing order, and plug positions for
the 2.8L v6 found in the Pontiac Fiero. I think I have it right, but
the little diagrams found in the tech manuals seem to conflict with each
other, and I was just hopping to hear it from some one who has worked
with one. Also I am trying to track down a fuel consumption problem.
The thing is getting about 10 to 12 mpg, which seems pretty bad for a
small automobile. I was thinking at first that it might be a pinched
return line, but I seem to have good fuel pressure, and I don't get any
errors codes in the diagnostics. I am looking a possibly the O2 sensor,
but if anyone has a better suggestion.

Looking at your engine, with your distributor to your right.
The cylinders closet to you (spark plugs visible) the cylinder numbers from
left to right is 2, 4, 6. The cylinder bank furthest from you, they are
numbered 1. 3, and 5. The firing oder is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. Normally your
number ! plug will be at the 10 o'clock position on the distributor, if nothing
has been disturbed.

There is several things that can cause this problem. One may be a O2 sensor,
but the first thing I would look for are vacuum leaks, there are several to
consider, one going to the MAP sensor, also to the egr valve, and the vapor
canister and pcv valve( check and replace the pcv anyway. Aslo clogged or
leaking injectors can cause mileage problems.
IS there black smoke coming from the tail pipe? Fuel pressure should range
beteen 30-35psi at idle to 40-45 when the engine is accelerated.
Does the car idle poorly or stumble when the gas pedal is applied while
driving. Also a very dirty air filter will cause poor fuel economy, and fuel
injected engines are very sensitive to it.
This is general but I hope it helps.

Firing order....GM 2.8 (173 c.i.) V6.....123456.
Cylinder #'s.....should be embossed on intake manifold (with firing
order)....but be aware....if they are not there.........
the 2.8 V6 is numbered differently from other GM V6's......2.8V6 has cyl
# 1, 3, 5 on right bank.....and #'s 2, 4, 6 on left......as you look
towards the front of the engine (front of engine has pulleys &
fanbelts......distributor is at rear of engine) So.....stand at the
distributor end of the engine......now look towards the front of the
engine.......numbers above will apply .
Hope this helps.
