I'm having the weirdest car problem I've ever even heard of, let alone
had. I have a '97 Mercury Sable. When I change gears, the radio
shuts on and off! There's definitely a pattern to it:

-- When I put it in reverse, the radio shuts off.
-- When I put it in drive, the radio comes back on.
-- When I put it in park, the radio shuts off for about 3 seconds,
then comes back on.
-- When I put it in neutral, the radio shuts off for about 1 second,
then comes back on.

Anyone have any idea what this could be? Thanks in advance.

That car has a GEM, or generic electronic module, that has circuits for the
radio and transmission range sensor among other things ... power windows,
power locks etc. I have seen a malfunctioning trans. range sensor cause the
symptoms you describe.

I think there has been some past posts about the transmission range sensor

causing this along with some other problems such as steering assist.

My brothers 1996 Taurus had the exact same symptoms that you are
having. Turns out (from what I remember) the problem was related to
the tansmission range sensor, or wiring, just like the other replys
indicate. He had his fixed at the dealer under warranty and never
acted up again.

What would happen with his car is that the audio from the radio would
mute for a when the car was put in reverse, the power would remain on
to the radio, then when shifted into drive, the audio would come back
on. It freaked me out. Glad I don't have to work on that thing! Too
many electronic do-dads ;-)

So far everyone thinks it's the transmission range sensor.

Now I have another question: Does anyone know how much this will cost
to fix? The car's not under warranty any more; it's got 116K miles on
it, and except for this problem, it runs fine.

Many thanx to all who've responded.

No, it's just your basic factory-installed stereo.
