Just wondering. Anybody here knows if the '97 Chevrolet Cavalier runs on
timing chain or timing belt?

Doesn't that depend on which engine is in the Cavalier?

Assuming that it hasn't changed since it was called the Quad 4, the 2.4L
Twin Cam engine uses a timing chain. I'm not so sure about the 2.2L (I think
that's what it is) but I think that the 2.2s are direct descendants of the
2.0s like the one in our 88 Corsica, which I know uses a chain. I think that
GM tends to use chains rather than belts.

Both the 2.2 and the 2.4 litre engine on cavaliers use timing chains, the only
difference is the 2.4 has alot more involved in changing one of them.

There are a couple of available powertrains for the Cavalier. I believe the
2.2 and the
2.4 both are chain driven. Someone may need to correct me on that 2.2 (I
know the old 2.5 was gear driven) The 2.4 is definitely chain driven. I
don't think GM even uses timing BELTS anymore.

I assume you mean the Pontiac 2.5 "Iron Duke". When was this offered in a
Cavalier? I could be wrong but I just don't remmeber itbeing offered.

We could both be wrong, but what difference does it make. I never said the
2.5 was
available, only that it was gear driven.
It doesn't matter what freaking engine came in what freaking car.
I was talking about engine construction not senseless dribble.
As a GM tech I have more things to keep up with than what year what engines
were
offered in each and every model. Perhaps some nut that lives in a dark room
worshiping
Cavaliers could tell you every available option for every year since
inception.

Please excuse the apparent rudeness, I am apparently in a bad mood.

Seems like everytime someone in here says something intelligent, someone has
to bicker
over a moot point. I am here to help answer peoples questions, not argue
semantics.
The poster asked what engines came in a Cavalier for this model production
year.
I answered him. He asked if they were chain or belt driven, I answered him.
If he wanted to know more he would have asked more.

Have a nice day.

Is the 2.2 engine equipped with a timing belt or does it use a chain?
