I don't remember the exact wires that are "shorted" to reset the
service and oil lights. You might try mailing off to the BMW list.

I seem to remember reading something about shorting wires together
will reset the lights but that there is also a chance of doing some
real damage to the SI board.

OK, it wasn't me who wrote the article you mentioned, but this may
help as well:
Under the hood there is a jack for diagnosing purposes. There the BMW
service tester is attached, but also a small device with which the
inspection lights are reset. This little device does only one thing:
It makes a short circuit between two ports for a specific time interval.
And this you can do perfectly by hand with a piece of wire and a clock.
And now the answers to the three questions arising:
* Which two ports to connect:
There are two kinds of diagnosing jacks used, depending on year of
manufactoring of your car:
- Small one with 15 ports, until 1987:
You have to connect port 1 (one) with port 7 (seven).
It looks something like that:
1
/------\
1 | o O o \
| o o o )
2 | o @ @ | <<--- @ = the two reset ports
| o o o )
3 | o o o /
\------/
- Large one with 19 ports, from 1988 on until now:
You have to connect port 7 (seven) with port 19 (nineteen).
* How long to connect the two ports:
That depends on what reset you want to do:
- "OILSERVICE"-reset (i.e. the parameters for inspection remain
unchanged):
2,5 - 3 sec
- "INSPECTION"-reset (i.e. full reset):
10 - 12 sec
* Which steps to do:
1. Ignition *off*
2. Connect the two ports.
3. Ignition *on*
3. Start counting the time when ignition is turned on.
4. After the obove mentioned time has elapsed, disconnect the
two ports.
Just that I don't have to buy you a new car:
*** All this comes without guarantee. Do it on your own risk. ***

BMW changed theservice connector in the late '80's, so you should find out
when this took place.
I bought a service tool for my '85 535 for ~ $50, but I would use a piece
of wire now that I know that is all that is required.
