The tire dealer suggests BFBoodrich Comp T/A tire, same size, V rated.
He claims comparable performance or even slightly better traction.
I have no clue. Does anyone have any ideas on this?
Thanks.

You probably bought the SHO for performance reasons and when Ford
designed this car they put the tires on it that would deliver this
performance. Most car manufacturers usually don't give two hoots about
the original equipment tires when they sell you a "plain jane"
cruiser.....but the SHO is definitely not in that category.
Don't fall into the trap of looking for tires with higher treadwear
ratings. These ratings are determined by the tire manufacturer....there
are no comparitive standards in the tire industry. Generally, the tire
manufacturer is honest, however treadwear is related to
"softness/hardness" of the tire.....i.e., the lower the rating the
"softer" the rubber compund. The "softer" the tire, the more adhesion.
If the dealer sells Goodrich, he's going to tell you that they're the
better tire....likewise with the Goodyear dealer. Most of the car mags
have articles re: tires. (Car & Driver, Road & Track, etc.). Based on
having owned 44 cars in my life (most performance types), my gut advice
would be to go with the Eagles if they've given you good performance.

I think it is the Comp T/A HR/VR with the 340 rating -- other T/As may
have different numbers.
My understanding is that the treadwear number is a reference number, compared
to a standard tire (whose treadware is 100). What's non-standard in the
industry (unregulated) is the 'standard' tire. So I'd expect that each
manufacturer is indeed self-consistent, but that due to differences in,
say, Goodyear's 100 tire and BFGoodrich's 100 tire, the ratings for
different brands are difficult to compare.
On the other hand, I think temperature/traction ratings are standard,
and you should go for A's in both.
For a reference point, I have 195/60-15 Comp T/A HR4s on my Mazda, and have
put 40,000 reasonably aggressive miles on them. As a result of infrequent
rotation, two are worn out (and were worn out probably 5k ago), and two
are fine (another 10k? not sure). I am trying to decide on the replacements
as I type this. I'd wanted to switch to a non-all-season, but I am wary
of mixing tread-patterns and don't want to pop for 4 tires while 2 are
still good -- advice?.

The above warnings notwithstanding, I am very happy with the 225/60R15 BFG
Comp T/A VR4's that I put on my 1990 SHO. They are very capable of keeping
up with the power and handling stresses of the SHO and my driving.
The GT+4's on the 1991 SHO have a unidirectional tread pattern and are 16"
tires, but here are my impressions. The BFGs are quieter, better riding, and
have better traction in the rain and snow than the GT+4's that originally came
on my car. A friend here is also very happy with a set of Yokohama AVS U+4
215/65R15 on his '90. I don't know of anyone who has gotten new tires on a '91
yet. Given my experience with the BFGs, I would recommend them to anyone
looking to replace the Goodyears that are original equipment on the SHO.
