I have a 1996 Toyota Corolla with 4 speed auto overdrive transmission.
Whenever I first drive the car after it has been sitting for a few hours
or more, the transmission refuses to shift into overdrive.
After the first couple of mile, the transmission shifts into overdrive
normally. What is the problem?
the car has only 6500 miles on it. The dealer says it is "normal" for the
car to do that. ...I personally don't think that is true! This problem
happens in both cold and warm weather

Absolutely normal. Tranny will not shift into overdrive until coolant
temperature switch lets it.

Most automatic OD transmissions have a temperature sensor to prevent OD
lockup until the transmission reaches a certain operating temperature.
This usually takes a mile or so unless it is really cold. It is normal
behavior. Don't worry about it.

The dealer is being straight with you, if it was allowed to go into OD,
while the engine isnt fully warmed, there would be more emissions, that
is why its designed this way, relax and enjoy the ride (((ooops, thats
Nissans line)))

This is not "normal". At this point it could be electronic (bad
gorund, Bad sensor) pay attention to how long you have to drive and
then let sit (exactly). Then take it to the dealer or a trans repair
facility and say you have to drive it for x amount of time and let it
sit for x amount of time to get it to do this and allow them a
reasonalbe time to try a duplicate what you are finding this will make
it easier to diagnose.

This is absolutely normal. The electronically controlled transmission
computer will not allow the transmission to shift into overdrive until the
engine is warmed.

Just one question, how do you know if your auto tranny is in overdrive or
not? I have 2 cars(auto) with overdrive, but I don't see any differences
while driving. BTW, both cars are pretty new.(96)

The impression I got from this message was the individual was driving
the car parking it letting it sit for a while then driving it again
and experiencing the problem. It was stated that it happens in cold
or warm weather. If the customer is driving the vehicle letting it
sit (2hrs on a 75 degree day) and then experiencing the problem it is
not normal, it wouldn't cool off that fast. On start up (first thing
in the morning) it should not go to OD (read below, person is not
complaining about this). I told the individual to pay attention to
how long he was having to drive and how long he(or she) was having to
let the vehicle sit. Then take it to the dealer or trans repair
facility. There is the possibility this one is new enough to not have
the thermostat cut out but I belive that it does (the newer one's just
cut Lock-up). Ask jumping bean if he(or she) is noticing the problem
in the morning when he first starts the car that would tell us for
sure if it has the thermostat switch.

Normal condition. The ECT ecu watches for an input from a water temp
sensor to signal the trans valve body to allow the shift to
overdrive. Done for emission and driveability concerns.

This is perfectly normal my car does it also. Read the owners manual and
it will also say it is normal. This isnt something new to OD trans
either. My father 87 Toyota Van even does it. It is to allow the engine
to warm up properly and to keep emissions down.

This is all the information I have on this vehicle I have sent
numerous
e-mails to jumpin bean to no avail There is the possibility that he
could
be experiencing the normal morning temp cut out but that was not how I
read
his post, again he mentions nothing about how it performs in the
morning.
If he is experiencing it in the morning then why is it bothering him
during
the day after the vehicle sits for a few hours. Again I told him to
pay
attention to how long he was driving the vehicle and how long it was
sitting. Then take it to a repair facility and give them time to
reduplicate what he was experiencing. This problem is not normal to
experience if the vehicle has been sitting for a short period and
could be
a sign of a electrical
problem that would need to be addressed. Lets hear from Jumpin bean
before
we render a diagnoses.

You mean you can't tell by just listening to the motor? On my 85
Celica GT, at 50mph it makes about a 400 rpm difference that you can
feel and hear. (For the record, it doesn't go into overdrive when
cold, and never has... only after a couple miles).

The trans also has an overdrive defeat switch so you can turn 4th gear
off, for climbing and descending hills... if you turn it on while on
flat ground., you can see an immediate rev jump!
