I just had my car in for a coolant change. The
service dept. team manager recommended an EFI/throttle body
chemical cleaning as part of preventative maintenance.
I never heard of this and can't find anything in the owner's
manual, so I took a pass.
The cost would have been $125.

Can other people advise me on this service. Is this just a scam?

this service is to remove the carbon build up on valves and in the
combustion chamber. It is a valuable service however that is a very high
price. I am interested in what area you are from In my area, central
Illinois, the service sells for arond $70.00

If your car is running ok it's a big waste of money . I would just
get a can of Techron fuel system cleaner and run it through every 7000
miles or so . Cost about $5 . You can buy alot of cans of this for $125
This is all i have ever done and have never had a EFI or throttle body
problem . If you want to clean the throttle body you can get a can of
throttle body cleaner at Kmart for about $2.50 and do it yourself .

Is this the same as a fuel injector cleaning? if so, walmart does it for
$15.88.

At $125, it's mostly a scam. :) You probably don't want it or need
it at any price because most fuel injectors are clog-resistant, and
flushing chemicals can be harsh on the insulation of the wiring
inside the injectors (run wet for cooling). Just add a bottle of
Chevron Techron or Regane to your gas tank every 12,000 miles - it'll
clean your injectors without munching them, plus it'll remove carbon
deposits from the combustion chamber (less pinging) and intake valves.
.
A lot of dealer service departments sell unneeded maintenance, and
you can save up to 50% by having only the required maintenance
done instead of what the dealer recommends, even if you follow the
manufacturer's severe-use schedule.

Good decision to pass and save $125.
Yes, there are chemicals that may be used to clean the EFI throttle body
without damaging the electronic parts. But it certainly does not cost
$125.
And why would you want to clean the throttle body anyway? It is well
tucked under the hood, and working properly. So who cares about some
dust....

I am always amazed by the creativeness of some mechanics to bilk the
naive customers...

There is something you omitted, Is it Throttle body with injector or without as in multi point
manifold mounted injectors.
If it is TBI it is a resonable price if it is Not TBI and the Throttle body does not have an
injector/s it is a rip off.
In both cases it is nesecary.
In multi point the throttle body gets quite a large muck build up at the throttle plate edge, this
can and does affect the vaccum signal at the vac ports and affect the airflow of the throttle plate.
This is a major cause of poor idle in a single throttle plate TBI. The Throttle plate and body can
be merely wiped out with a solvent or light spray observing certain conditions.
A system or injection clean will not affect the throttle body or clean it and poor idle often blamed
on dirty injectors in fact is a dirty throttle body.
The TBI has internal injector/s so It may refer to cleaning of them which is more involved and more
expensive.
Use EFI fix at my site if you need.

A message to all,

Some of you may believe that the engine Vac systems as they are called, are
all hocus pocus, but they do work. I had this service done to my 89 F Bird
with a 2.8. They start with a rail cleaning for 45 minutes, then they spray
out the intake with a cleaner which removes carbon deposits. This includes a
thorough cleaning to the throttle plate and intake runners and valve
decarbonation, piston top cleaning. The set up is like this:

The Machine, is placed between the fuel feed and the rail with a return to the
tank, it has an internal filter which traps any loosened deposits and reroutes
the cleaner back to the rail for reuse, then the remainder when completed is
run back to the tank which is then used while you drive. The intake cleaning
is done with a pressurized refillable aerosol style can which is filled with a
non flammable cleaner which passes thru a plastic hose which showers the
intake with a spray from all directions. The machine monitors fuel pressure,
fuel regulation and vacuum while the procedure is taking place. Upon
connection, my engine vacuum on the gauge was 15", when the procedure was
complete, it was over 20". The fuel pump was checked for max pressure, the
regulator checked out aok. My car was the "Guinea pig" for a Snap-on techs
demo, It sold me because I regularly cleaned the system with OTC cleaners
available at the auto stores. Keep in mind that this car had 40k on it and ran
like poop, always had the best of everything when serviced. I left the shop on
two wheels (well maybe four but felt like two!!). Works very well for the 1+
hours time a tech must spend on your car, If you figure in the labor, this
service for 100-125 bucks is a steal. But unfortunately must be done every
15-20k for good results... . Dont hesitate, clean your throttle plate!! Oh
and this service is also available for carbed vehicles too!!
