I need information on putting a 700 R-4 automatic transmission in a 1969
NOVA. I would like recommendations, and ideas from anyone who has done
this to their car. Also, how these transmission's work in cars with
powerful motors. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Car stats:
1969 Nova.
327 Engine.
3.55 Rear End Gear.
It currently has a 4-speed transmission. Engine has about 350 horsepower.

Please reply by e-mail za...@inetport.com

Thanks

The 700R4 is almost as strong as the old TH400. We just had one installed
in a 69 Impala SS427. That should be a sufficient test eh? You will need
to relocate the pads on the trans crossmember, and you will need a new
driveshaft.

Howdy.

Chevy High Performance magazine did an article on this last summer. I
believe it was in their "Super Chevy" issue. It was an excellent issue
to be sure. They did the step-by-step swap of a TH350 with the T700 -
including the drive-shaft shortening. For what it's worth, I've heard
that swapping in a 200-R4 is an easier job - no driveshaft chopping
required. I don't know how they hold up with HO V8, but they were the
stock tranny used in the Regal GNX.

I have a 700R4 in my supercharged Chevy 350 (engine swap) Buick GS.
Crossmember must be moved back, driveshaft must be shortened, this may
cause interference with exhaust and emergency brake cables. Shifter
linkage is a bit difficult to sort out; it's OK thru drive but after that
the detents are different and most old cars don't have enough throw from D
to L to cover the 4-speed auto. The most difficult part of the swap is
fabricating the TV cable bracket. This part has to be RIGHT ON, it is
very precise and the tranny will NOT shift right if it is not done
properly. Due to carb variations there is no universal kit; you have to
get the geometry (available in tranny books, really good ones) and figure
it out. On a 1-10 scale of fabrication, it's an 8 or 9. The swap is not
trivial but is well worth it -- 3.06 first gear and 0.70 overdrive works
very nicely for street/strip. Also, a 200-4R won't work; it bolts to
Buick/Olds/Pontiac bellhousings and not Chevys.

Good luck,
K2Michelin

Hi there!

I have an '86 Caprice that came from the factory with a 200-4R.
This transmission will most definitely bolt to a Chevrolet V8. I
am not sure of application (the other Caprice in the driveway, an
'85 305 V8, has a 700-R4). The car came with a 305 / 200-4R and
the transmission has held together behind a 350 TPI engine now for
a year. I am not sure how strong the 200-4R is, but I have been told
it's good to around 300HP. Check places that build transmissions for
Grand Nationals (they came with 200-4Rs). However, its has a less-
steep (lower numerically) first gear, and a .67:1 overdrive, so it
is more suited to cruising than off-line acceleration. Of course,
that just gives us an excuse to drop lower gears in the rear-end :).

a 200r4 will bolt to a small block chevy, i had one in my el camino w/ a
305, the transmissions are fairly weak, but can be built up. stock, i
think would hold up to about 250 hp.

I am currently in the process of installing a 700 in my 66' El Camino,
after talking to several transmition shop's I finally decided to use one
out of a 86 Suburban do to the suburban models evidently being stronger
then most.

Two options.

BIG hammer and beat the tunnel open for clearance.

Mark and measure the tunnel and trans. Cut a section out of the tunnel
and weld in a new piece shaped to clear.

Both have been used. There are even pre-bent sections sold if you wanted
to do the second method.
