recently. with the limitations on carburetor adjustmentS, is there a easy way

Thanks for the info, i printed out your reply for a reference.
I tried to find the part number on the carb without success. my gm repair
manual indicates it's a e4me and i think it's 695cfm. the engine is a l-69.
maybe these numbers really won't help.
I noticed my 86 mcss is also running rich, black inside the exhaust pipe.
this car only has 36,000 miles.
I plan on pulling the carb off the 85mcss in dec. or jan. to install a
edelbrock performer intake manifold, at that time i will check it out as you
suggested. thanks for the help. -- brock85
I have a k&n on my ford 460 and really haven't seen a notable benefits. but
with the chevy running rich would the k&n allow enough additional air flow to
reduce the rich condition or is the k&n only of benefit at higher rpm's. --
here are several things to consider, 1- the o2 sensor- these usually fail in
a lean bias, so the computer adds extra fuel,2- the cannister purge valve-
pull the large hose off the float bowl- if there is vacuum, or it's full of
gas it's bad, last is the mixture control solenoid in the carb, when these go
bad it is difficult to diagnose without a labscope or scan tool. the
resistance should be 20-40 ohms, if it is it doesnt mean is good.
