I have an 85 monte carlo s.s. with the 305 ho engine. carb was rebuilt three
years ago. the car has
144000 miles on it.

The engine is running rich and there is black soot in the exhaust pipe. gas
mileage had dropped
recently. with the limitations on carburetor adjustmentS, is there a easy way
to lean it out.

Brock,
I would doubt that any effort to make this carb run leaner would help. A
total overhaul would be suggested BUT before this, I would recommend the
following since Quadrajets have inherent problems.
Remove the carb carefully not letting it "list". Keep it straight up. Put a
punch in a vice and set the carb mounting hole over the punch. Put a paper
towell under the carb and let it sit over night. See if any gas is leaking out
of the carb. There are 4 places under the main body of the carb that have
"lead" plugs that tend to leak and must be repaired. If you get a book called
"Rochester Carburetors" published by HP Books and written by Doug Roe and Bill
Fischer, this book can show you all the places you will need to repair.
While this may not be the problem, I would suggest you weigh the float. It
should be about 7 grams. If it is more, then replace it.
You have not given a carburetor number so all these suggestions are a guess.
If you want to supply a carburetor number, I can get closer with
specifications.
Not withstanding, this is all to guess the choke pulloff is working and the
choke has been adjusted to open fully when the engine is warmed up.

Thanks for the info, i printed out your reply for a reference.

I tried to find the part number on the carb without success. my gm repair
manual indicates it's a e4me and i think it's 695cfm. the engine is a l-69.
maybe these numbers really won't help.

I noticed my 86 mcss is also running rich, black inside the exhaust pipe.
this car only has 36,000 miles.

I plan on pulling the carb off the 85mcss in dec. or jan. to install a
edelbrock performer intake manifold, at that time i will check it out as you
suggested. thanks for the help. -- brock85

I realize now that i am limited in methods to resolve this problem. without
starting a big group
discussion on k&n filter i have a question.

I have a k&n on my ford 460 and really haven't seen a notable benefits. but
with the chevy running rich would the k&n allow enough additional air flow to
reduce the rich condition or is the k&n only of benefit at higher rpm's. --

here are several things to consider, 1- the o2 sensor- these usually fail in
a lean bias, so the computer adds extra fuel,2- the cannister purge valve-
pull the large hose off the float bowl- if there is vacuum, or it's full of
gas it's bad, last is the mixture control solenoid in the carb, when these go
bad it is difficult to diagnose without a labscope or scan tool. the
resistance should be 20-40 ohms, if it is it doesnt mean is good.
