Whoops! I wasn't thinking this morning, and a topped off my 5 speed manual
transmission with gear oil instead of ATF. I drained it and refilled with
ATF,
but I'm concerned about any residual gear oil. Should I drain it again, or
will it be o.k.? Thanks,
Mike

I take it it's a Ford!? no you won't have a problem

ATF is basically vegetable oil and alcohol w/a bunch of additives

I wouldn't worry about it

Don't worry about it! The gear oil will work like a treatment additive and
accually help it!

? All the ATF I know about is derived from petroleum or synthetic base
stocks.

You are thinking of BRAKE FLUID....not ATF.

Brake fluid is not a mixture of alcohols and vegetable oil either,
although chemically the 'alcohol' part is correct.

Currently, it is accurate that brake fluids are based on glycols or silicone.
But there was a time when the Dept of Agriculture had to certify that the
potato oil used in brake fluid met specs.

Mike,
It is my understanding that ATF is gear oil. You didn't say what weight or
type of gear oil you put into the transmission but I would strongly believe
that there is no problem here. You might have actually helped it.

Ford specified 80w-90 gear oil for its 5 speeds when shipped to Germany.

Best of luck,

Paul

My old Chevette came from the factory with the manual transmission half
filled with ATF. I suspect this is a cheap way to make the transmission
shift easier in cold weather. I highly recommend you re-fill it with
synthetic, or semi-synthetic gear oil, like my higher quality VW Golf.
