My Nissan Sentra '92 has now 115k miles... when is the timing belt (or
chain) due for a change ? Is that something I can do myself ? If not, how
many $ does it cost ?
Thanks, Patrick
Patrick,
If it was my car I'd leave it alone! It has a timing chain that will
last for a long time.

Saurabh.

I had a 92 Sentra and it has a timing chain, not a belt. That is why you
will not see any reference to belt replacement in the maintenance schedule
at the back of the owner's manual. Should not need replacement for a long
time.

I own a 91 Sentra SE-R with a SR20DE engine, it uses a chain instead of a
belt, the base engine in the 91 and up Sentra is the GA16DE, it also uses
a chain. Hope this helps!

Wrong. The chain in this engine is durable *NOT*. We usually see them
broken or making lots of noise at about 80-120K. Cost to remove head,
replace bent valves, replace chain, guides, sprockets, etc. exceeds
$600.00.
Are you talking about the chain guides or the chain itself? The plastic
guides are the weak link. Not the chain. Nissan has come out with new
steel backed guides that don't break.

Well.. given all the views that has been aired so far, I would like to
know whether I ought to replace the timing chain or not. So can I know
the general consensus of the group?
Change the timing belt and water pump at the same time to prevent
extra labor when the water pump goes out Timing belt is made out
rubber not steel.so it goes out around 80k miles.
The expense is getting to the durn things. Next time, I'll replace
the belts maybe at 70-80K, 90K was a little long, and do the water
pump at the same time. Manual said 60K I think, which is conservative.

Listen to the dealer.
Try again, it's the guides that break, not the chain. Nissan now has
replacement guides that are metal instead of plastic.
