Can a cell phone set off a car alarm?

We have a 2004 Toyota with a factory installed car alarm. The alarm
goes off randomly. Sometimes a few times a day, some days not at all.
No physical disturbance is setting it off (it does it even sitting in
our closed garage). However, we noticed that it seems to happen when
my daughter's cell phone is in the car. I am still trying to confirm
this relationship (by having the phone in there, or not having it in
there, and seeing when the alarm goes off).

Could the cell phone be setting off the alarm? It's nothing obvious,
like the phone being on "vibrate" mode, and receiving a call. Could
the phone be sending a radio signal that is at a frequency that sets
off the alarm (like the frequency of the emergency button on the key
pad)?

We had it at the Toyota dealer, but they didn't find anything (this was
before I made the cellphone connection).

Thanks for any help!

Is your daughter in the car at the same time her cell phone is there?
If so, does she have a remote in her pocket/purse?

>Could the cell phone be setting off the alarm?

I'll go out on a limb and say that it's unlikely.

No, the car is empty (if she were in the car, she would of course set
it off). The phone sits in the middle console under the radio, in a
cup holder/junk holder space.

Like Oleg, I think it is unlikely...BUT, recent tests on cell phones used in
aircraft have shown some unusual interference problems.

Many believe that cell phones do not interfere with commercial aircraft
navigational systems and their use should be allowed. I read some web
material on recent tests (not the Mythbusters tests) that suggested they
can interfere but it is difficult to predict and reproduce.

My alarm system sometimes goes off without obvious provocation. I know
it is very sensitive to vibration, and that could be an explanation.

In Houston there was the situation years ago where an 18 wheeler driver
kept being awakened by his alarm going off. When he would check it, there
was nothing apparent to activate it. After several episodes one night, he
went out and disabled it. Next morning, the tractor was gone. Clever
thieves.

I know that CB's can for sure set off car alarms as well as store alarms
and interfere with the vehicle's computers. If the car alarm had a bad
ground or unshielded power, the respond signal from the cell phone might
fire it off. Some cell phones put out a pretty good punch if they are a
long way from a cell tower.

We had one car on our street that just didn't like my new Dynomax high
flow muffler, same for quite a few in parking lots. I just idle on by
and the rumble gets to them. These are the same ones that bitch when
you just walk too close to them. Any train tracks near?

Could be. The phone will send and receive a pulse when it changes cells
and when it goes in/out of coverage. I know my Cingular phone interferes
with my car and home stereos and I can tell a call is coming in before
the phone rings when it is near my computer.

looks to me like the thing to do would be to remove the phone from the
car, and see if the condition still exists.
