Roberto Guerrero has been unable to secure a ride for the Marlboro Challenge
all-star race set for this Saturday, Oct. 3.
Raul Boesel has been awarded the tenth slot on the basis of championship
points and higher finishes than Eddie Cheever, who was tied with Boesel in
points.
Though I haven't read it, I presume this means that John Andretti will also
be in the race, since he has more points than Boesel.
Starting from the pole will be Michael Andretti, on the basis of a separate
points system rewarding only poles and first-place finishes. The others (in
no particular order): Emerson Fittipaldi, Al Unser Jr., Bobby Rahal, Danny
Sullivan, Scott Goodyear, Mario Andretti, and Paul Tracy.

"Good. For a minute I thought we were in trouble."
Is this event to be televised?
ESPN's Paul Page said during the Portland telecast that
they would be "bringing the Marlboro Challenge, as well as
the race, on the weekend of Oct. 4."
I assume that this means they intended to televise both
Nazareth events, the Marlboro Challenge and the Bosch
Sparkplug 200.
While we know that the Bosch race will be tape-delayed,
there have been no previews for the Marlboro Challenge,
nor any mention of TV coverage on ANY network.
Knowledge, anyone?

I believe that during last night's tape-delayed broadcast of the Bosch race
it was noted that ESPN will show the Marlboro Challenge next Sunday (10/11).
Check your local listings for the time.

They also said who won it at the beginning of the broadcast. Don't panic,
I won't spill the beans here.

I think it's supposed to be on the evening of Monday, October 19, on ESPN.
Correct me if I'm wrong, please....

I think Page must've received a strong reprimand after
the telecast for that one. Spoiling your own coverage
might annoy your advertising accounts, no?
Somewhat related to this is the recent ESPN bashing.
While the bashers brought up some good points, points
I had never entertained before, I was not inclined to
agree with most them, being somewhat of an ESPN loyalist.
(Racing coverage on TNN, PSN, and TBS is almost pathetic
compared to ESPN, IMnsHO.)
Then I watched the Nazareth race keenly and noticed how valid
some of these points were: solid graphics over in-car
footage, wife shots instead of pit stops, etc.
Hah! And then they mentioned the winner of the Marlboro Challenge!

I don't have the exact time, but I believe that ESPN
will broadcast the event on Saturday or Sunday at
around 7 or 9pm, EDT.
