Okay, Mario-bashing comes up in this newsgroup again, with recounting of
last year's Detroit incident and the one at Toronto a few years back. So
what does Mario do? He runs right over Eddie Cheever's right rear tire on
the first lap, taking both cars out of the race. Sheesh!
I'm glad to see Danny Sullivan back in the winner's circle.
On to Indy....
And now some corrections:
IndyCar Racing magazine reports that A. J. Foyt was indeed in a Lola T90-
Cosworth DFS in Australia, as initially reported and not as AutoWeek said.
And while AutoWeek reported that A. J.'s "T92-Chevrolet" was one of Derrick
Walker's cars, IndyCar had the entry as a Leader Cards/Walker car--it was
Leader Cards' Buddy Lazier's backup. A. J. took a tour of the course in a
pace car, Lazier shook the backup car down on race morning, and A. J. climbed
in it for the first time during the race, only to retire after 2 laps with
transmission trouble. I would guess that Leader Cards was just trying to get
the maximum exposure for their local sponsor, Project Pacific.
Also, while Scott Goodyear had qualified in a T92 in Australia, he had to go
to his backup T91 after the race warm-up.
And I had Bobby Rahal's winning average speed at Phoenix wrong--it was
130.526 mph rather than 120.526.
AutoWeek says that A. J. Foyt replacement George Snider raced a T92 at
Phoenix. I thought he was in a T91. A. J. Foyt was reported as crashing in
a T91 during practice, so was he in his backup car at the time?

"Good. For a minute I thought we were in trouble."
Mario takes out at least one guy a race...he took out Scott Goodyear in
Phoenix...
