Vic Lee (once boss of BTCC winning team VLM) was sentenced to 12 years for
his part in illegally importing cocaine to Britain yesterday. A co-conspiritor,
driver Rob Mason, who mastermined the plot, got 18 years for his endeavours.

VLM won the 1991? BTCC championship with old shape BMWs and Will Hoy. The
remants of the team were bought and rebranded to became Team Dynamics.

For those that don't know the full story, VLM took one of their transporters to
Zandvoort, ostensibly to demo a car to a potential customer. Whilst there, the
villains of the piece sealed a considerable quantity of cocaine in an air
bottle, and switched it for one in the transporter. The truck was seized as
soon as it arrived back in the UK, and Lee, Mason and others were arrested.

I remember reading about Vic's endeavours, I'm pretty sure
that Steve Soper was the lead driver for VLM in 1991. Whether
he won the BTCC or not I'm not quite sure.
Before the Vic's bust I remember reading Steve Soper's
column in Autosport. The general theme was Steve gushing about
the professional and exacting standards of VLM. One section comes
to mind in particular, Soper mentions that even when the budget
was getting thin Vic would not hesitate to 'dip into his own
pocket'. Sad irony, especially for Mr. Soper.

How about some seedy motorsport trivia?
-Vic Lee and Rob Mason were arrested on drug charges, they were
from the BTCC.
-Darrell Alderman was also arrested on drug charges, he ran in
NHRA Pro-Stock.
-Randy Lanier was arrested as well for drug trafficking,What
series did Randy Lanier race in?

I believe Lanier was either running CART or he was running IMSA and trying
to get into Indycars. Anyone out there able to conferm or deny this?

Also, don't forget the Whittington brothers and John Paul Sr. & Jr. All
were in IMSA. John Paul Jr. is out of prison and back racing now (drove
the Gunnar Porsche last year, I believe).

Yes, Randy Lanier was in CART. I don't think he drove any P cars. I
think he came up from the dirt tracks. So, that's the point? Don't get
me wrong...I'm just trying to find out about this conversation. I've
been racing in IMSA and SCCA for about 10 years now. Is this about
drugs in racing?

Not only was Lanier a driver in IMSA, he won the championship in GTP, then
he attempted CART.

1. I'm not sure there is a point, it's just trivia about various villains
2. Is Randy Lanier related to anyone running the Lanier photocopier/fax
corporation? They sponsored us last year....
