614-529-7000 MOTOROLA ANNOUNCES SPONSORSHIP OF
INDYCAR TEAM FOR 1994 SEASON
CHICAGO, February 2, 1994 -- Motorola, Inc. one of the world's
leading providers of wireless communications, semiconductors, and
advanced electronic systems, announced today that it will sponsor
an Indy Car on the PPG IndyCar World Series during the 1994
season. Motorola will serve as title sponsor of Rahal-Hogan
Racing Team car, co-owned by three-time PPG IndyCar world Series
champion Bobby Rahal and veteran Indy Car owner Carl Hogan. Mike
Groff, who was hired as a test driver in 1993 for the Rahal-Hogan
Team, will drive the Motorola entry.
"A motor sports sponsorship in Indy Car racing offers broad-based
appeal to a wide consumer audience, allowing us to gain visibility
and brand exposure and also enhance product awareness among our
target audiences," said Bob Growney, president and general manager
of Motorola's Messaging, Information and Media Sector.
"In addition, Motorola's automotive electronics, two-way radios
and other communications products tie in well with auto racing,"
said Growney. "We look forward to a successful partnership with
Rahal-Hogan Racing."
The #10 Rahal-Hogan/Team Motorola car will compete at all 16 races
on the PPG IndyCar World Series, beginning with the Australian FAI
IndyCar Grand Prix in March. The car, a T94 Lola, will feature
Honda's new 2.65-liter engine that marks the debut of the
company's engines on the Indy Car circuit.
Bobby Rahal is a three-time PPG IndyCar World Series Champion,
capturing titles in 1992, 1987 and 1986. In addition, Rahal won
the 1986 Indianapolis 500. Rahal and Carl Hogan brought the
Patrick Racing Team at the conclusion of the 1991 season and Rahal
subsequently became the first owner-driver to win a championship
in the first year of operation. Rahal ranks first in all-time
Indy Car earnings with over $12 million.
"The Rahal-Hogan Racing Team is delighted to be associated with
Motorola given the company's previous involvement in Indy Car
racing and their understanding and appreciation of motor sports,"
said Rahal. "We're excited about the start of the season with
Motorola as our sponsor and look forward to a successful year of
racing."
The Motorola Team car incorporates Motorola's engine electronics
as do other automobiles available in the consumer market. In
addition, Motorola two-way radios have been used for years to
provide a critical communications link between drivers and
crew/team management for Indy Car racing.
Los Angeles native Mike Groff has raced for three different Indy
Car teams since breaking onto the scene in 1990 and was hand-
picked to be Bobby Rahal's running mate in 1993. In his rookie
season, Groff finished runner-up for "Rookie of the Year" honors,
and recorded the fastest qualifying speed (219.015 mph) ever by a
rookie at the Indianapolis 500.
"The idea of driving with someone like Bobby is a dream come true
for me," said Mike Groff. "To be associated with one of the
greatest Indy Car drivers, and have the backing of a terrific
company like Motorola, is exciting and I look forward to a
promising season in '94."
In addition to its Indy Car sponsorship, Motorola serves as title
sponsor of a professional cycling team racing in Europe and the
U.S.; is title sponsor of the Western Open golf tournament on the
PGA Tour in '94; sponsors running events in Phoenix, Austin, TX
and Chicago; and is a communications sponsor for the U.S. Olympic
Committee providing two-way radios and other support.
