Steep Drop For NASCAR at Vegas

For the third straight week, a NASCAR race drew its lowest ratings in
several years.
Last Sunday's Shelby American from Las Vegas drew a 4.4 final rating
on FOX, down 32% from last year (6.5) and down 38% from 2008 (7.1).
The 4.4 rating is the lowest for the race since 2000 (4.0), and the
second-lowest in the 12-year history of the event.
This comes on the heels of the Daytona 500 drawing its lowest rating
since '91 and the Auto Club 500 drawing its lowest rating since '03.
While competition from the Winter Olympics certainly did not help
matters, the 10-year low for Sunday's race -- along with the 18-year
low for Daytona and the seven-year low for the Auto Club 500 --
continues a trend from last season.
Among the final five races of last season alone, one race hit a 10-
year low (Ford 400), with nine, eight and seven year-lows for three
other races (the Amp Energy 500, Checker O'Reilly Auto Parts 500 and
Tums Fast Relief 500, respectively).
As alluded to earlier, Sunday's race aired directly opposite the
Olympic Men's Hockey Gold Medal Game (Canada/USA), which drew a 15.2
rating and 27.6 million viewers.
Despite the declining ratings, the Shelby American was the highest
rated non-Olympic sporting event on broadcast last weekend.
Through three races, NASCAR on FOX is averaging a 5.9 rating, down 18%
from last year. Dating back to October 2008, ratings have now declined
for 35 of the last 45 Sprint Cup telecasts (including the NASCAR All-
Star Race, Budweiser Shootout and Daytona 500 Pole Qualifying).

Well, here are some things that NASCAR and FOX can do to increase
ratings:
1. Convince Darrell Waltrip to STOP SAYING "....Boogity Boogity
Boogity Let's Go Racing Boys!!!!" at the start of each and every
single freakin' race.
2. Throw "The Chase" in the trash.
3. Make the "car of yesterday" safer and bring it back.
4. No more alternate paint scheme's are allowed. We can't find our
driver on the screen.
5. At the start of the broadcast, you must guarantee that the race
will start in at least 10 minutes. Not 90 minutes later. These 10
minutes will include a short intro from the announcers of where they
are, then a national anthem, fly over, prayer, "Start your
engines!!!!!" then start the race. No need for bands and explosions
and fireworks.
6. Throw Digger in the trash along with whomever created him.
7. Keep commercials down to 2 minutes a pop and only 10% of total
airtime.
8. Demote Jimmie Johnson to the Nationwide circuit. His luck is just
above and beyond that of any normal human being.
9. Air one race without any announcers so that the one guy in this
newsgroup can shut the hell up for at least 2 weeks.
Ratings should be fine after that.

again? He would be banned from the tracks for some time. He got caught

Somebody is going to get killed one of these days. I do not think fans
want the drivers to do what Carl did.

This always bothered me too, but has been "fixed" with this consistent start
time thing, right? 1pm, 3pm, 7:30pm eastern? So basically, turn on the tv
19 minutes past the hour, and you should see the green flag waving, right?
(1:19pm, 3:19pm, and heck, i dunno about the 7:30 one...)
