When I returned home from work this afternoon, I had a message on my
answering machine from my ISP announcing that after January 1, 2010 they
will no longer offer Usenet. What are the recommendations by the group as
to alternatives?

Here is the list of NSPs of which I am cognizant:

http://www.big-8.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=faqs:news_providers

Some free news servers are listed at the bottom of the page.

I paid $10 for 25 GB of text-only from Astraweb many years ago;
it works. I later signed on with Supernews because a friend
worked there and I liked the filtering they did; Supernews
has since been swallowed up by Giganews. I may bail out one
of these days. The cost for text-only is on par with a
subscription to a magazine, more or less.

I am acquainted the man who runs Albasani.net (free). He
is a character!

Eternal September may have more bandwidth than Albasani--I haven't
tested either one. Eternal September has been around longer.

Ran into the same deal with the Fairpoint taking over the Verizon
customers.

Went to freenews, which is what I use now.
No real issues for the little that I do, and it's a freebie.

I wouldn't know who to recommend, but I use Google Groups - which is
Usenet. Can you still do that?

A couple of caveats on Google Groups: sometimes posts from
there come out weirdly (and annoyingly, to those not using GG)
formatted.

And, GG sometimes lags the rest of Usenet by a significant amount
of time - up to 24 hours, and often more than 8.

I would suggest making GG the "last resort", only if none of the
other suggestions work out.

Thanks for the info! I'm inclined to go with the 25GB Astraweb thing. I'm
not a heavy user since I just frequent this NG and another RV related one.
My posting frequency is about the same for both. I would think that 25GB of
content would last me quite a while.... shouldn't it?

Years and years!

The last time I looked, I hadn't yet used a full GB of the 25 I paid for--even
when I was checking newsgroups on Astraweb a dozen times a day or more.

Somebody on another group just posted this...no affiliation with them...yer
on yer own hook if'n they're no good...YMMV, etc.

Newsguy.com is offering a holiday special that may
be of interest...

Buy 1 newsgroup account & get 1 free. Combine the free time into one
account or give the free time to a friend. The special includes all their
account types & service terms (1, 3, 6, or 12 months).

Example: Buy a 6-month newsgroup account for $12 (3GB month) and get a
second 6-month account free. That works out to $1 month for newsgroup
access, and all their accounts include...

- Text & Binary newsgroups
- NNTP & Web access
- Newsgroup search engine
- Unused GB's roll over
- Free SSL
- Free 2 day trial

Their other accounts cost as little as $2.50 month (15GB), $4.50 month
(50GB), and $8 month (Unlimited) with the special offer.

Dunno who my ISP finally settled on for my news feed, but it's free,
includes binaries and doesn't tag an advert on the bottom of my posts, so
I'm happy.

Text Usenet is extremely efficient. If you're not visiting the
bunny groups, 25GB will last the rest of your life.

Yeppers...I saw that. Marty (and others?) may remember some of the hassles
my ISP had for awhile. Once it started werkin' good, I just quit thinkin'
about it.

Giganews (aka Supernews) is probably the best of the remaining
for-fee news providers. They may also be the only one left that
does ISP outsourcing.

Newsguy is also good. The others tend to be flaky or spammy
(especially in the text groups).

However, as Marty has alluded, if you don't need/want the
binaries there are much cheaper and entirely satisfactory
solutions.

You have gotten from Martin great advise.
(many thanks to Martin!)

A bit over a year ago, I went with "Newsguy".
Seems quite fine, think it's around $25 a year.

I noticed that a lot of you are using a variety of services.
What do I miss, by using Freenews, and my own older newsreader?
I've never done a subscription one, and don't really know
anything about them.

Probably nothing at all.

The big difference is in how binaries(*) are handled. Most of the
free and very low cost newsservers are text only, and don't do
binaries at all. The higher cost servers provide binaries, with
varying levels of retention, completeness, and spam filtering
(all of which is irrelevant if you don't want binaries).

Within the text only servers, some of them have configuration
problems with moderated groups, such as RASNM. Some of them also
have other reliability issues. If you're not seeing any problems,
tho, then there's no reason to think any other server would be
any better than what you have.

(* binaries are pictures, movies, sound files, etc - basically
anything other than plain text. Most of them are copyright
violations, and 90% of them are pr0n).
