Dear Ed,
As you can see, John McCoy, one of my fellow moderators
in rec.autos.sport.nascar.moderated, has asked me to
reply to your article.
I've been watching NASCAR since the early 80s.
I've been a moderator on this newsgroup since it
began in 1998.
I've been to four live races: Martinsville,
night Bristol, and two Glens.
I'm happy with the TV, radio, and internet
access I have to the races.
I love the safety improvements in the CoT.
I expect gripes will subside as the teams get
used to it. This is just its first full
season, if I remember correctly.
If the CoT was a cookie-cutter car, there would
be a random distribution of winners. The fact
that KyBu and CE have won 14 of the first 25 races
suggests that most teams haven't figured out how
to make the car work. As JJ's dominance last
weekend showed, it can be done.
I enjoy the Chase immensely. It gives the bubble
teams a huge amount of coverage. So, too, with the
guys way down the scale trying to hang on to a
top 35.
Ford is my favorite marque. I fear that Toyota will
shortly be sweeping all three series, but I don't
want NASCAR to hobble them. I want the others to
learn how to compete.
I'm OK with the money in NASCAR. Money makes the
cars go 'round. More people are making a living
from the sport in these days than ever before in
history--including journalists like yourself.
NASCAR is formula racing. I've enjoyed the formula
for more than a quarter of a century, even through
all of its developments. I find the whole show
entertaining, on and off the track. I don't want
to turn back the clock to when the cars were slower
and more dangerous. We had some great races in
the good ol' days; we've had some great races in
recent years. I'm looking forward to the Chase
to see if anyone can stop KyBu. It should be a
good show.
I know you wanted people to be brief. Tough.
Take what you like and heave the rest. :o)
Marty
