Periodic post just to keep the gears oiled in the newsgroup
machinery :-)

In: Harvick, Logano, Keselowski, Johnson, Hamlin

In good shape: Truex, Kahne, Menard, Earnhardt, Almirola,
Kenseth, Mears, McMurray, Patrick. Gordon, Edwards

Need a win: Newman, Ku Busch, Ky Busch, Larson

The "in good shape" is based on points - if the Chase were
today, those 11 would be in on points (Ragan would be in
that list, except he presumably will not run the full season
in the #18 car).

The "need a win" are those drivers who are unlikely to make
the Chase on points (due to missing races, or in Newman's
case penalty) but are beleived to be eligible (due to the
NASCAR "they probably would have run all the races if they
could have done" exemption).

Interesting fact: Tony Stewart, who has run 6 races, is
30 points behind Busch, who has only run 3.

But don't race winners still have to be top 30 in points in order to get in?

If that's the case, even if he got the exemption from having to run all the
races, I don't see Kyle Busch being top 30 in points. He's just missed too
many races.

How many were let in on points last year?

Yeah - depends, really, on when he comes back. There's only
33 (I think) drivers intending to attempt all the races, so
if he comes back in the not-to-distant future, and runs well,
it should be possible to get in the top 30.

That said, if he's not back by Richmond or Dega, it's probably
an impossibility.

The "in good shape" is based on points - the listed
drivers are in or close to the top 16 in points.

The "need a win" are those drivers who are unlikely to
make the Chase on points. I'm leaving Busch in for now
due to Brian France's typically ambiguous "we'll look at
making an accomodation" remark, which probably means
they'd waive the top-30 in points requirement.
