Now we know the Final Four. To my way of thinking, if Harvick or Logano wins,
we have a legitimate champion. If Hamlin or Newman wins, we have a fluke
champion. Simple as that.

Really? OK. I was watching F1 and football instead,
Did someone dump Keselowski into a wall, or a trash can?

Meanwhile:
Harvick 4 wins
Logano 5 wins
Hamlin 1 win
Newman zero wins, all year!

So, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, and Dale Earnhart with 4 wins each
and plenty of good finishes, are all out. Whatever.

Nope. Brad finished fourth, but it wasn't enough. I guess nobody wanted to
go to Homestead on Brad's "you dumped me, I'm going to dump you" list.

This new Chase format has been wildly successful in ramping up the intensity
and the media interest, but it needs tweaking for sure.

Obviously there's no perfect system. I'd still like to see the Chase field
composed of winners only, but if they're going to stick with a field of 16
with some getting in on points, then they need to award the bonus points for
winning a race in all three elimination rounds, not just the first one.

That wouldn't completely eliminate the possibility of someone getting thru to
Homestead with no wins on the season, but at least this year, that would have
been enough to put Jeff Gordon in over Newman.

Doggone, Bob, you beat me to it...

No, he ran well, but just not well enough. There weren't really
any heroics or panic moves all race (altho Newman did use the
old "eight wheels are better than four" to get past Larson on
the final corner).

I think what happened was Keselowski, Gordon, and Kenseth all
knew that they needed to win to advance. And Harvick was so
strong, running a quarter lap or more ahead of 2nd with ease,
that they all knew there was no point in trying a checkers
or wreckers finish - they weren't anywhere close to checkers.

Saw some numbers posted on how things would stand if the
prior points systems were in use:

With the 2013 rules, Logano leads Harvick by 29 points.
Everyone else is mathematically eliminated (and Logano
would basically have to drop out early for Harvick to
gain 29 points).

Just using straight points over all races, Gordon leads
Logano by 29 points (odd coincidence) and everyone else
is mathematically eliminated.
