In the second stage, up to 3 race winners advance, and at
least five drivers advance on points.

In for sure:

Logano (1 win)

In good shape:

Busch, Edwards, Newman, Hamlin, Harvick, Gordon, Kenseth, Kahne

In danger:

Keselowski (-22 points), Earnhardt (-25), Johnson (-27)

The results of the first stage suggest that it's hard to come back
from an early disaster, altho these three are not as far back as
Almirola was. And, of course, there's always Talladega...

Wow! Whoda thunk any of these three, much less all three of them, would be
the ones in trouble at this stage.

I'm thinking that the guys currently in the danger zone are all capable of
winning or at least getting a solid top 10 finish. If Harvick, Kenseth, Gordon,
or especially Kahne have trouble at Charlotte, they could be in the hot seat
heading to Dega.

I'll be REALLY surprised if 2, 88 and 48 all miss the next cut.

Well, I think why they're in the danger zone is that they
_do_ have to win to get out of it. The evidence of the
first round is that it's hard to make up a bunch of points.
Sure those guys can get solid top 10 finishes, but so can
all of their competition. And making up 5 or even 10 points
per race won't be enough.

But I'd also be surprised if all three of them drop out.

Probably out:

Realisticly the only way for the last 3 to advance is to win
a race. And that means at least 2 of them will not advance.

Kahne and Kenseth are seperated by one point, whichever one
finishes best at Talladega will probably advance.

I thank you John, for trying to explain.
And, I think you do a real good job of it.
But,,,,,, sheesh, they (NASCAR) have made it just too complicated,
and such a silly multi-stage process.
I'm caring less this year than normal.

I understand what you say, but I actually like this version of
the Chase. Yeah, it's not a real championship when the result
is based on just one race, but it is interesting to see who can
advance and who doesn't.

Aside from that, tho, I'm also in the caring less group. The
races themselves are not that interesting, and won't be until
NASCAR fixes the car (which they don't seem to understand how
to do, based on the recent rules announcement).

It would be a lot more interesting if the rules let the guys
who are "in danger" try something radical to make up ground.
As it is, you don't see the guys in trouble really appearing
to make much effort to advance (I'm sure they are trying, but
they just don't have options to really do much).

Well, I think Bob wins again, having picked Kahne and Busch
as two of the four drivers to miss the cut this round.

The surviving eight:

Logano (1 win)
Harvick (1)
Keselowski (1)
Newman
Hamlin
Kenseth
Edwards
Gordon

Picking the next four to drop out is a real challenge (and
I haven't done so well in the previous rounds), but I'll
guess Newman, Hamlin, Edwards, and Keselowski.

So, Kahne, Earnhart, and Jimmie Johnson are all out?
I thought they said they were going to reward winning more?

Hmmmm,,,, if I read this corectly,,,,
http://www.nascar.com/en_us/sprint-cup-series/standings.html
Johnson and Earnhart won 3 races each.
But they are out of it. As is Kahne with 1 win.

Meanwhile (as I'm seeing it??) Newman & Kenseth have not
won any, and are still in it!!!!

This system seems silly, confusing & arbitrary to me.

Yep.

Indeed they are.

But Johnson, Earnhardt, and Kahne have won no races
during the Chase. Hence, no reward.
