JENKINS, LEE TO ANCHOR IRL RADIO NETWORK
INDIANAPOLIS, December 15, 1995 -- Motorsports broadcasting veterans Bob
Jenkins and Gary Lee will anchor live coverage of the 1996 Indy Racing
League on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network.
The announcement was made by Kurt Hunt, IMS marketing coordinator, who also
named Vince Welch and Mike King to the network talent team. The radio
network, which has presented the Indianapolis 500 for more than 40 years,
will carry all five IRL Indy races in 1996, beginning with the Indy 200 at
Walt Disney World on Jan. 27.
Jenkins has been the radio voice of the Indianapolis 500 since 1989,
anchors ESPN's Speedweek and NASCAR Winston Cup coverage, and is the ABC
Sports television anchor for the Brickyard 400 Winston Cup race at
Indianapolis. Lee is a veteran motorsports announcer and featured reporter
for ESPN and the IMS Radio Network. He is co-anchor of the ESPN weekly
racing series, Saturday Night Thunder.
Vince Welch, sports director at WNDY-TV in Indianapolis, anchors the
station's extensive daily IMS coverage for both the "500" and "400" and will
provide feature coverage for the radio network at IRL events. Mike King,
sports director at WTHI-TV, a CBS affiliate in Terre Haute, Ind., joined the
IMS Radio Network broadcast team this year as a pit reporter.
Hunt also announced that Indianapolis radio station WIBC (1070 AM) will be
the exclusive network broadcast partner in the Indy metro area for the four
IRL races other than the Indianapolis 500. For the May 26 "500", the
network's open policy with local radio stations remains the same. Along
with Indy, the IRL schedule includes Disney, the Phoenix 200 March 24, the
New England 200 at New Hampshire International Speedway August 18, and the
Las Vegas 200 Sept. 15.
For the Indianapolis 500, the radio network ranks as one of the world's
largest, with nearly 600 affilliate stations domestically and world-wide
coverage on Armed Forces Radio and LeSea Broadcasting. Noted Hunt, "The
'500's' enormous radio audience provides a terrific starting point for
building the Indy Racing League broadcasts."
