MARYSVILLE (8-15-98) - Defending Twin Cities Speedway champion and
current track point leader Mark Hall of Grass Valley became the
seventh winner of the 1998 California Sprint Car Civil War Race Series
Saturday night at Twin Cities Speedway in Marysville.

The California Sprint Car Civil War Race Series is a traveling race
series dedicated to "360" cubic inch powered sprint cars. In 1998 the
series travels to four different California tracks for a total of 13
events all boasting cash winnings as well as accumulative points for
the coveted Civil War championship. Saturday's event was the eighth
round of the 1998 campaign and the third of four season visits to Mel
Hall's 1/4 mile clay oval nestled in the California farming community.

After winning his heat race earlier in the evening and a number "8"
being drawn in the Taylor Wings Pill Draw by tenth-quick A-main
qualifier Mark Tabor, Hall started Saturday's feature event on the
outside of the second row. At the waving of the green flag the lead
went to polesitter Rich Tiner of Rio Linda as he shot out in front of
Jamie Cavagnaro and Hall on the initial lap.

With just three-laps complete, the first red flag of the event came
out when Jeff Young and Roger Crockett collided in the second turn,
sending both drivers into vicious roll-overs. The incident also
collected Roseville driver Chad Riolo in the process. Riolo received
no visible damage from the incident and was able to return as well as
Crockett following some speedy sheet metal repairs. Young, however,
wasn't as fortunate as he retired his severely damaged, nearly new J &
J mount to the pit area.

Once green flag racing resumed, Tiner maintained his lead as Jonathan
Allard of Chico moved into the to five. On the seventh lap the second
red flag of the evening came out when David Robinson Jr. of Sacramento
crossed up and barrell rolled coming out of the second turn. Robinson
was uninjured in the incident and did manage to return after making
repairs. Two laps later, Riolo brought out a yellow caution when left
front suspension damage ended his evening. At this point Allard moved
into fourth as Yuba City driver Kevin Lovell rounded out the top five
while Tiner maintained the lead over Hall.

Following a restart at the eighth lap mark, Hall began to close in
on Tiner's lead for the next ten laps. On the 19th circuit, Hall was
finally able to use lapped traffic to his advantage as traffic slowed
Tiner and allowed Hall to power around the leader coming out of the fourth
turn. Just seconds later Allard and Cavagnaro moved in on Tiner as Colby
Weisz of Colfax moved into the fifth position.
As Hall maintained his lead, Weisz worked his way past Cavagnaro
and began to challenge Allard for third. With just three laps to go a
yellow flag delayed the event when Jim Richardson stalled on the front
stretch. On the restart, Weisz locked bumpers with North Highlands driver
Scooter Lambert and both driver spun off of the bottom of turn two to
bring out the yellow flag again, Weisz managed to break free of the
incident and keep going. With the final green flag, Hall maintained his
lead to score his first feature event win of the season, Tiner finished
second ahead of Allard, Lambert, and Kevin Lovell.
"Tonight, we finally got a break," said Hall. " I Thought
tonight's (feature event) would never get over. This is our first win of
the year and this is our oldest and smallest (V6) motor. We burned a
couple of pistons in our new motor at Placerville last week and decided to
go with the smaller one tonight and it really got us around the top of the
track."
In preliminary action on Saturday, heat race victories went to
Joey Magaruh of Vacaville, Jim VanLare of Windsor;Kyle Schild of
Sacramento and Hall. In the B-main event, fast qualifier Roger Crockett of
Rio Linda grabbed the early lead and maintained it until the white flag
lap when he was slowed by lapped traffic, allowing David Robinson Jr. of
Sacramento to power into the lead. Crockett finished second followed by
Weisz; Shane Scott and Jeff Hallieb.
This Friday night, the California Sprint Car Civil War Race Series
will advance to John Padjen's Silver Dollar Speedway for the night round
of competition. This event has been penciled in on the original Civil War
Schedule due to early season rain outs and is the final Civil War race
prior to the second annual "Pacific Sprint Cup" at Silver Dollar Speedway
in Chico. Friday's event will determine the entry list for the September
16 event that opens the Gold Cup week as only the top 32-drivers in the
Civil War point standings are permitted to compete. Action is scheduled to
begin at 6:30 with qualifying on Friday. For any further information
