I really like next years rule for the Indy 500. They are going to leave the first 6 spots on the grid empty to prevent a reoccurrence of last years cheating by teams from that other, less successful, series.
Well, I'll be off now. Time to lay down with my sister.
Say a prayer for Coyote Foyt. He's a role model for us all.

Yep. About as hilarious as the empty seats at the "Gran Prix of Chicago".

I guess people in the Windy City know better than to waste their money on a
no-passing event like this.
Maybe cart can dump it and run another race overseas.
I hear Chicago limits the number of people on the road outside the track.
That's why there are so few people.
I bet it's Tony George's fault that the cart boys can't race side by side.

Yeah but there's one difference: the people who attended were there
because they wanted to be there. They were not FORCED to buy tickets
as part of a package deal.
Terrible scheduling the race so close to the innagural winston Cup race
> Terrible scheduling the race so close to the innagural winston Cup race
I knew it. There *must* be a good reason. It just can't be the lack of
interest.
Are you kidding me????? I've seen CHUMPS blame poor crowds on
everything from Tiger Woods to Mother's Day...but this ranks right up
there with 'em all. The only thing that surprises me is some CHUMP
hasn't come here trying to convince us it was a decent crowd. Wait,
that will happen.
Even I thought four billboards, an airplane banner and a newspaper ad
would have drawn a more people than that. Geeze, the greater area of
Chicago is one of the most densely populated areas in the Western world.
On the other hand it's tough to work a con in the city of con...and the
only thing more miserable than the crowd *was* the race.
And here's a big neeener...neeener...neeener to all you CHUMPS who
denied what I had to say earlier--what I saw with my own two eyes and
the pulse I've learned to monitor over 50 years in this great city. Go
on listening to your Brian Sweeney's (a real expert on Chicago) and
raz's. You guys wouldn't know the truth if it hit you on your fucking
heads.
Here's a big I told you so, CHUMPS. Read it and weep.
On crack, indeed.
Guess not too many wanted to be there, huh?

Yeah but at an IRL race, you know all the other spectators names!
BOTH of the other spectators. Especially if the monster truck races
aren't in town that weekend.

Since you think Tiger Woods is a natural section of the zoo and you don't have a

I guess that part about working a con is why the IRL hasn't made any inroads in
Chi-town.

Its really sad about all the empty seats. Sortas reminds me of Indy. And the
IRL race at Charlotte. And Texas, and... every IRL race.
Gotta keep in mind that the entire state of Kansas would show up for a
goat-breeding just to have something to do.

Are you sure there were four different billboards? It's possible they
only had one, but moved it to different places on different days.
Better check with the billboard observers here to see if they were
simultaneous sightings.

Can't do. This is the same crowd who claimed you couldn't stub your toe
in town without it being on a billboard advertising the Chicago Grand
Prix. Couldn't look up without seeing the sky blackened by planes
pulling CART banners. And apparently pinned most of their hopes on
Mikey singing "Take Me Out to the Ball game" at Wrigley field.
Yet no criticism of their sacred organization not dipping into its
$200,000,000 of cash so somebody in Chicago would realize a race was
taking place in Cicero. Can anyone say Stockholder Reserve? You CHUMPS
are being chumped.
And the race? Just when the hell is somebody besides myself gonna get
really angry about the use of the words Grand Prix? Like every other
great racing moniker it has stolen--Indy car, Vanderbilt, champ car--the
use of the term Grand Prix is being pissed on by this rogue
organization. A race? Here's what last week's winner had to say
courtesy of the Chicago Tribune:
"Carpentier said it was "impossible" to pass. "You're just following
guys..."
"Patrick Carpentier isn't sure what he was doing for nearly two hours
Sunday at Chicago Motor Speedway, but he knows one thing: "It didn't
seem like racing.""
Apparently everyone in Chicago felt the same.

When the Champ Cars rolled into Chicago the first time around, there was no
top level racing. Then all of a sudden there are all three of the American
series in the city. Any idiot can figure out that NASCAR would hurt CART's
attendance in Chicago, and having the races within a couple weeks doesn't
help at all. Part of the prblem was bad scheduling, plain and simple. If you
don't see that you must be mildly retarded.

I certainly didnt feel that way. I was very happy to be there and
cant wait until next year. Sure more passing would have been nice but
not all races are like that. I do not demand NASCAR type races. This
oval race seemed alot like most F1 races in that passes are very few
but when they occur, they take great execution to pull off. Some
tracks like Hockenheim have great passing chances while others like
Hungary, have far fewer. Its still racing in my book.
The crowd at Cicero was quite enthusiastic about the race too. and i
sat in section 45 which was the less populated area. move over about
4 sections and it was far more packed for the rest of the stadium.
It was a great time. Met loads of drivers and Joe Montana! All very
very nice people.
>Can't do. This is the same crowd who claimed you couldn't stub your toe

[snip]
Ah! That explains it.
Stubbing their toes jolted their brains, causing double vision. Two
of them, so it was quadruple.
One billboard, four sightings.
>I certainly didnt feel that way. I was very happy to be there and

To the extent that any race is better than no race, I won't argue. And
my guess is that loyal CART fans will still enjoy them anywhere. As a
boxing fan I really do understand that feeling. Whether he's fighting a
champion or a chump I wouldn't miss an Oscar de LaHoya fight for the
world if it came to my area. I really am glad to hear you had a good
time.
What I can't understand, however, is CART staying with those speedway
wings on its short ovals.

True, Milwaukee isn't like that. Neither is Nazareth - opps.

Yeah, too much passing - too many cars - and all those damn people, who like
crowds.

Ohhh - the excitement! Formula 1 on an oval - how exciting! CART is one
ground
breaking series!

I don't see how a NASCAR race could effect CART attendance, unless
the implication is that a good portion of the CART fan base are also NASCAR
fans, and chose to attend that race over the CART race....in which case, the
CHUMP's just blew themselves out of the water regarding their wine 'n'
cheese snobbery. Rather amusing when you think about it....
You guys really are ignorant, aren't you?.
Did you not read what I posted? it was an INAGURAL Winston CUP race in a new
venue that was scheduled within 2 weeks of the Champcar race. Do you want me
to draw you a picture?. The US is NASCAR mad, plain and simple. If you enter
a city with no competition fot the first time, you will do well. When the
competition is a new NASCAR race, you'll get flattened.
All of you guys shold give your head a shake.
Oh, I see. So that makes it official I guess. Cart is not by the wildest
stretch of the imagination the most popular racing in the US, according to
your logic. I'll buy that.
Tommy Anderson, JR It aint braggin' if its the truth.
Yep. They need a new package that makes for more racing. I think the
current engine formula has run its course.

That makes no sense at all. Not surprising, considering the source. You
are saying one is FORCED to attend an IRL race?
Carey in Pearland
Yup.... I was at the race and afterwards met with a friend of mine whos
seeing one of the smaller teams managers(dont want to say the team),. I
love CART, by the way... but he said, "you blokes all deserve your money
back, it was a horrible race". Said straight away that they should have had
the road coarse wings.
Chris S.
Chris S
PS... You better PRAY that CART deos not fold....A lot of current IRL
drivers would be out of work. LOL.
When I was at Chicago, I loved seeing the 2001 INDY Championship on the side
of the Penske trailer. LOL even louder!

No, it isn't, adn I don't think it ever hass been or ever will be, simply
because NASCAR is sooo ingrained in the American psyche. Thank you for
supporting my point that since there was an inagural WC race in Chicago, the
CART race suffered.
God you guys are so full of bullshit its not even funny.
No, but if you wanted to attend the Inagural NASCAR race in Chicago, you had
to pay for teh IRL tickets as well. trust me, had they not had the package
dea;, the IRL numbers would havd been just as bad, probably worse than the
CART numbers. Don't froget the big "sellout" at Chicagoland for the IRl race
was 31,000. Thats about 3000 or 4000 more than tha CART race, which people
didn't buy as part of a package deal.
Does the math and logic escape you?, obviously it does.
Yeah...it's so tough living in a society where they actually come into
your house and FORCE you to buy tickets to auto races you don't want
to go to. Such a tragic sign of our times...
How obvious. Oh, here (.), looks like you lost this.
Interesting. I thought there were a few more there than at Chicago.
> And the

30,000-45,000 each year. Cancelled after spectator deaths.
>And Texas, and...
Good crowd each year...and they actually have the race.

Some with poor attendance, some with very good attendance. Sort of
sounds like CART...

Hmmm...
You mean, CART made ANOTHER bad decision? Obviously, they're on some
kind of roll, huh?
Gannassi also did it, but you must have missed that one.
Helio's ring was quite the darling of the Cart pre-race shows and media.
Yep, the Cart boys glow about Indy, rightly so. Surprised however, that
Mario didnt try to cheapen the Ring for Helio like he did about Smokey
Yunick in the last month Speedway Illustrated.

The math certainly escapes you. Nashville was a sellout at around
33,000, of which maybe 1/3 were season tickets. Kansas City was a
sellout at 75,000 all of which were season tickets. Chicagoland has yet
to hold its IRL race, the date for the race is Sept. 2nd.
You are definitely oblivious, just stating the obvious.

Add to that that technically, EVERY CART Driver who has won the Indy 500 was
not racing in a "series" race. It never was a CART race.
Oh, it sort of was. They didn't sanction it but they did award points
to all that participated while it was part of the CART championship.
